2010 Winter Olympics USA vs. Canada hockey: NBC misses out

hockey-usa-canada-320.jpgHockey? Who in America cares about hockey? A whole lot of disgruntled fans who had to hunt around for the game Sunday, that's who.

The Olympics conspired to match up the United States and host country Canada's hockey teams for a prime viewing time on Sunday (Feb.21). And even though it was just one of the prelim round robin games, fans were keen on witnessing the rivalry when they had a chance since many of these games have been taking place during the regular work week.

Unfortunately, NBC buried the game on one of their cable stations, MSNBC, missing the boat on what would have been great network viewership. What the puck?

Warning: Spoilers below.

If you haven't watched the game, then you can catch video highlights of each of the goals on NBC.com.

The matchup was incredibly tense, and through hard work and a bit of luck, Team USA was able to take the game from Canada. Brian Rafalski's opening strike only 41 seconds in set the tone to the fierce game, and one the biggest highlights was Ryan Kesler's amazing one-handed empty net goal that sewed up the game 5-3.

Did you watch? How 'bout that hockey, eh?

that's why NBC sux.

I watched it, but it wasn't in HD, thanks to showing it on MSNBC....but there also weren't any commercial breaks during the action either, so it was a win some/lose some proposition.

I had it in HD on my Dish Network

Awesome Game. Watched in HD. Dumb decicion by NBC to put in on MSNBC. They screwed up!!! Go USA!!

It was on in Canada on CTV, in HD, no problem whatsoever!!! There are some advantages to living up here!

Actually I thought it was a great idea. By not having it on NBC it allowed us west coast viewers to actually see an important competition live instead of on "screw you PST" 3 hour tape delay.

I agree with Slder78. The fact that it was on cable made it much better for those of us stuck out west.

Update: Jeff Zucker still has a job.

I thought it was a smart move because of past hockey ratings here in the US. It would not even get anywhere close to the normal ratings the olympics have had so far.

I think most people knew it was on MSNBC. They have a daily schedule on their website that lists what events are going to be played on what channel at what time. I'm glad they didn't put it on NBC. I've been enjoying the 3-hour Bob Costas recaps + live skating.
