2010 Winter Olympics: Joannie Rochette's emotional short program

joannie-rochette-320.jpgCanadian skater Joannie Rochette performed her short figure skating program Tuesday night (Feb. 23) amidst heartbreak.

The Olympian's mother Therese had died only a few days before of a heart attack while in Vancouver supporting her daughter.

Nevertheless, Rochette decided to soldier on and when Tuesday's short program began, the world watched as she delivered a strong and skillful program. A consummate professional, she embodied the Olympic spirit in all ways.

Everyone seemed to hold their breath, willing Rochette a perfect and clean routine. Even the usually chatty commentators fell silent out of respect for Rochette's endeavor. And when she finished and struck her final, triumphant pose, the world celebrated with her even as she then broke and displayed her fragile emotional state. Check out NBC's video of Joannie Rochette's short program.

You can even hear in Scott Hamilton's voice how affected he was by the performance.

Rochette finished the night with her personal best score and in third place. She'll return for the free skate, which is scheduled for Thursday in primetime.

Why would Americans watch anyone but their own athletes? I don't think they even know other countries are in the Olympics. We know NBC doesn't care about them, so since Americans just follow the party line, I'm pretty sure they only know what the US athletes did. NBC is as bad a communist country in how they cover the Olympics in such a nationalistic way. It's no wonder nobody here know other countries exist, NBC never shows them.

You have got to be kidding. Why is it that when people do not like something or someone they always have to blame it on something or someone else. I am here to tell you Nick Jonas that the USA media covers more than just USA athletes. I spent almost four hours yesterday watching the olympics and probably 75% of it was covering other athletes from other countries. So do us all a favor and get off your high horse. The USA does more for other countries than anyone else. You are a hater and if you do not like the USA then dont watch anything that we put out there. Do us all a favor and stay where your at. We do not need your kind of hate and stupid view here.

we would have gotten more pre-packaged schmaltz. Tom Hammond was understatedhttp://usspost.com/joannie-rochette-performance-usspost-com-6251/

For once and for the first time in a long time and my not ever wanting to link classiness and this pathetic network, I have to give NBC props for doing a fine job in how they handled this figure skater's situation and performance. Very rare of NBC to do anything right, but they got it right this time around. Now if the same could be actually said of their management and their prime-time programming.

The network blew it AGAIN. 99.99999 % of us can't get to the olymics and 100% of us can't see some events on TV. It is not just about ratings, it is honoring the skill, determination and competitive spirit of ALL the athletes.

We get to see a skater blow her nose, walk into the building, take her sweats off and talk to her coach. And yet we can't see the record breaking performance of an athlete in another sport because of it. I dont care for skating, but that is all I see.

To watch NBC videos on the internet you have to access from the US. I am an American living abroad who pays taxes in the US and still has a house in the US BUT becuase I am on assignment abroad, I cannot access the NBC videos.
