TV ratings: BCS Tide lifts ABC to a huge Thursday

Fast National ratings for Thursday, Jan. 7, 2009College football's national championship game carried ABC to a huge ratings win Thursday night and became the most-watched prime-time broadcast of the 2009-10 season so far.
Alabama's win over Texas gave ABC and average of 28.5 million viewers and a 15.8 rating/24 share for the night -- up a good bit from last year's title game on FOX -- and left the rest of the field in the dust. CBS was the best of the rest with 10.3 million viewers and a 6.7/10. FOX (4.5 million, 2.9/4) came in third, followed by NBC (4.1 million, 2.7/4). The CW (1.7 million, 1.1/2) trailed.
ABC's 9.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic beat the combined total of the other four networks. CBS took second with a 2.1, then came NBC, 1.5, FOX, 1.4, and The CW, 0.6.

ABC: BCS championship game - Alabama-Texas (26.6 million viewers, 14.8/22 households)
CBS: "CSI" rerun (9.4 million, 6.0/9)
FOX: "Bones" rerun (6 million, 3.7/6)
NBC: "Community" rerun (4.5 million, 2.8/4)/"Parks and Recreation" rerun (3.2 million, 2.1/3)
The CW: "The Vampire Diaries" rerun (1.8 million, 1.1/2)
18-49 leader: BCS championship (8.5)
9 p.m.
ABC: BCS championship (32.9 million, 18.0/27)
CBS: "CSI" rerun (10.4 million, 6.8/10)
NBC: "The Office" rerun (3.9 million, 2.5/4)/"30 Rock" rerun (3.8 million, 2.5/4)
FOX: "Fringe" rerun (3.1 million, 2.0/3)
The CW: "Supernatural" rerun (1.5 million, 1.0/1)

11 million for Mentalist rerun up against the end of the BCS game. I expect solid numbers for their return next Thursday. Still need to pick up in the 18-49 demo, though.
+ 30 million viewers for the college national football championship is AMAZING! No wonder these student/athletes walk around campus' across the nation as if they own the schools. They must generate tons of moolah for their respective schools annually.
