TV ratings: 'American Idol' falls but still rules Wednesday

larry-platt-320.jpgFast National ratings for Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010

Night two of "American Idol" fell off a good amount from its premiere Tuesday, but it still led FOX to a clear victory for the night. The 90-minute "Idol" averaged a little over 26.3 million viewers, down from close to 30 million on Tuesday.

FOX's position at the top wasn't seriously threatened, though, as it scored 21.8 million viewers and a 12.2 rating/19 share in households in primetime. CBS (11.4 million, 7.1/12) came in second. NBC (6.3 million, 4.1/7) edged ABC (5.9 million, 3.8/6) for third, and The CW was way back with a mere 717,000 viewers and a 0.5/1.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 8.5 rating nearly tripled the 3.1 for second-place CBS. ABC took third with a 2.1, followed by NBC, 1.7, and The CW, 0.3.

ABC aired a repeat of Modern Family at 8 p.m. (#4: 3.8/ 6), followed by The Middle (#3: 4.1/ 6), the regularly scheduled edition of Modern Family (#2: 5.6/ 8), Cougar Town (#4, 5.2/ 8), which held 93 percent of the lead-in, and week two of relocated Ugly Betty (#3: 3.7/ 6 at 10 p.m.),

Strong numbers for AI. It will be interesting to see if it maintains those levels after the hype starts dying down.

Easy target but I can't resist: Gossip Girl's re-run numbers are so low they might be within the error rate of the Nielsen survey. ie. it may be absolutely no one watched it. ;)

I think it's reason enough to give Dawn Ostroff a big, huge raise for a job well done. ;)

Over at ABC, those are numbers that won't set anyone at ease, especially when Modern Family is supposed to be your biggest new show.

On the zap2it front, it's good to see the posting software still hasn't been fixed. :(

Welcome back Rena... Missed you. Dont let the Street Teamers scare you away =-D

Strong start for AI, but we all love a good music show. It's sad that ABC has such poor quality shows, just look how badly there line up did, i don't see Ugly Betty sticking around much longer and its a shock that they actually renewed those god awful comedys for next year. It Seems that ABC wants to be the new NBC.

The blip for Jay Leno is undoubtedly due to the curiosity factor being generated by the current situation. But even so, it's pretty clear Ugly Betty has entered freefall territory.

I feel sorry for Mercy. It's actually a decent show, considering it's on the **** network NBC. Taylor Schilling is very good. Criminal Minds last night = fantastic. AI better watch out.. CBS is coming hard. I say CSI and Mentalist do well tonight against weak competition.

It's baaaaaaaack...

Nooooooooo!

Im for one not watching Idol this year because my girl Paula isnt there. I think people tuned in Tues to see how diff it was going to be and then Wed some didnt watch and others tuned to c the difference. I wonder how much itll lose in the coming weeks. #NoPaulaNoIdol

Sorry, I really think Ugly Betty needs to be off the air now.I don't know what it takes for ABC to see this. I tried to watch it but it's just not good anymore and the additions in characters is just like a dumb soap opera. It makes them look desperate. Get it off the air!

Poor Ugly Betty. I think it would fare better at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. At 10 p.m., people forget it's on.

Anyway, looks like R.I.P. for Betty. Too bad, it has been consistently good this season.
