Jay Leno on 'Oprah': I haven't talked to Conan

jay-leno-oprah-320.jpgJay Leno will offer up his perspective on NBC's late-night debacle on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Thursday -- and judging by a snippet of the interview, he didn't walk away completely unscathed.

In the interview, Winfrey asks Leno if he thought any of the things Conan O'Brien -- the former "Tonight Show" host whose ouster last week paved the way for Leno to return to late-night -- said about him in the past couple weeks was "hurtful."

"No. They were jokes. And that's OK. ... It's what we do, you know?" Leno says in the clip. "You can't -- it's like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you're a fighter. That's what you do." He also notes he hasn't talked to O'Brien lately, saying the time isn't right.

And in something that Leno-ites and Team Coco members can all agree on, he also calls the situation a "huge mess" in a promo for the episode on Winfrey's YouTube channel. Here's the interview excerpt:

Leno's "Oprah" appearance will air Thursday (Jan. 28). Will you be watching?

i don't need Leno's side. It's all gonna be damage control anyway. Team Coco 4 Life!

i am so sick of people feeling sorry for Conan, he got 45 million dollars to walk away from a job, i wish someone would give me that...

Everybody seems to forget that back in the day NBC took a huge risk on Conan ... and helped make him the star that he is today. What a jerk he is.

Isn't it great that Jay gets to spend an hour having his ego stroked by Oprah getting his side of the story out when Conan has a gag order on him for the next 7 months. Talk about spinning a situation. I don't feel sorry for Conan because I know he will be fine. I just hope two-faced Jay gets what he deserves.

Correction: Conan ONLY got 33 mil.

Jay Leno is so unfunny that it's sad. NBC is making a big mistake as usual by letting an amazing talent like Conan go.

i think ppl are being too hard on Jay. he is not Conan's handholder, NBC picked him because they felt more confident in Leno's ability to carry the show. if Conan had done that then they would've kept him. period.

No I won't be watching that Oprah episode. I've never watched the Tonight Show when Leno was hosting it because I don't like him, I certainly won't be watching that interview. Team Coco!!

I don't feel sorry for Conan one bit because I didn't find him funny to begin with and he should have never been given the job of hosting the Tonight Show. It was too big for him and he couldn't handle it. I always found him immature and unfunny, a jerk. On the other hand, I have always liked Leno and will watch today's interview and when he returns to the Tonight Show now that "Conman" is gone. I will never say it was Jay's fault because the network turned thw two guys against each other and got greedy. Team Jay all the way.

And Conan can go cry with his $45 million...

I don't understand why everyone is so upset with Jay Leno. If anything, they should be upset with Jeff Zucker for making such idiotic decisions five years ago by taking the show that Jay kept in the number one spot for years, and giving it to Conan to keep him from leaving and going to another network. Conan should have had the decency to turn it down. Instead, he chose to take it away from Jay, knowing that Jay was not ready to walk away from the tonight show. But, Conan's ultimatum was to get the Tonight Show spot, or he would leave. It is Conan and NBC who are the selfish ones. O'Brien is playing the innocent victim while walking away with $45 million dollars. He is very shrewd. He said he didn't want to be the one to hurt the tonight show brand. If that were the case, he never would have wanted to push Jay out while the Tonight Show was number one. Conan must really have something BIG on somebody over at NBC the way they cater to him. They really disrespected Jay Leno. And so did Oprah. I couldn't believe some of the questions she was asking Jay yesterday. She had the nerve to say that she thought the one joke Jay made about David Letterman was beneath him, even after all the attacks David was making against Jay. Then she turned around and said something similar about Jay's marriage when she said Jay works so much she doesn't know how he stays married and maybe his wife likes it. Such a hypocrite. She was supposed to be his friend, but she treated him almost as bad as Jimmy Kimmel did.
