James Bond 23 woos Sam Mendes

Director Sam Mendes is in talks to direct the 23rd installment of the popular 007 franchise, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Mendes, known for the Oscar-winning "American Beauty," isn't the most obvious choice for an action film director. He did, however, helm the war film "Jarhead" and has worked with 007 himself Daniel Craig before on "Road to Perdition." Mendes' latest film was the comedy "Away We Go" starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.

MGM, which produces the Bond films, is currently up for sale though, so this may delay hiring any director for the job at the moment.

Production could begin as early as June, with a 2011 release in sight.

Its a very convoluted situation it seems. Most fans seem to be predicting his hiring as director and some traditionalist Bond fans I have spoken to are lamenting the choice already. I hope despite the confusion everything irons out and we have some progress sooner rather than later.
