'Hurt Locker' wins Producers Guild top award, Oscar race tightens

It's coming down to the wire for "The Hurt Locker" and "Avatar" -- which one will win the Oscar?

"The Hurt Locker" was honored Sunday, Jan. 24 with top prize at the Producers Guild Awards, beating out "Avatar," "District 9," "An Education," "Inglourious Basterds," "Invictus," "Precious," "Star Trek," "Up" and "Up in the Air."

So far "Hurt Locker" has taken home numerous wins for Best Picture and Best Director from various critics' associations, the Critics Choice awards and now the Producers Guild, while "Avatar" has won the prizes from a few critics' associations and the Golden Globes. It should be quite the suspenseful Oscar night waiting to see which of the ex-spouses wins Best Director between Bigelow ("Hurt Locker") and Cameron ("Avatar") and if that carries over into a Best Picture win. In other theatrical categories, "Up" won for animated feature and "The Cove" won for documentary.

On the television side of the awards, "30 Rock" won Best Comedy, beating out "Californication," "Entourage," "The Office" and "Weeds." "Mad Men" won Best Drama against "Breaking Bad," "Dexter," "Lost" and "True Blood." "60 Minutes" beat out "Deadliest Catch," "Intervention," "Kathy Griffin: My Live on the 'D' List" and "This American Life" for Non-fiction Television. Finally, "The Colbert Report" won for Live Entertainment/Competition, beating out "The Amazing Race," "American Idol," "Project Runway" and "Top Chef."

The Academy Award nominations are announced Tuesday, Feb. 2 and the ceremony airs live on Sunday, March 7.
