FOX, Simon Cowell plot 'X Factor' for 2011
Simon Cowell may be bringing "The X Factor" across the pond next year, which could in turn pave the way for his exit from "American Idol."Cowell and FOX are reportedly close to a deal that would put "The X Factor" on the air in the fall of 2011. The show, a talent competition which Cowell executive produces and judges in the U.K., would likely anchor FOX's fall schedule while "Idol" is off the air.
If the deal goes through, Cowell would likely reduce or end his involvement with "American Idol" after this season, the LA Times reports. Getting "The X Factor" off the ground would likely preclude him from being on "Idol" full time.
Like "Idol," "The X Factor" is a singing competition in which viewers choose who moves forward each week. The main difference is that it divides its contestants into four groups -- boys, girls, groups and "over 25s" -- and has each of the show's four judges mentor contestants. Cowell, singer-songwriter Cheryl Cole, singer Dannii Minogue and music manager Louis Walsh are judges of the British show.
FOX executives will answer questions at the Television Critics Association press tour later Monday (Jan. 11). We expect the topic will come up.
