Box office: 'Avatar' four-peats, 'Daybreakers' stakes its claim
America's not done with "Avatar."
Coming off a phenomenal holiday period that saw the 3-D blockbuster sell more than $350 million of tickets in the U.S. and Canada over just 17 days, "Avatar" experienced the smallest decline of any picture in wide release this weekend, signaling that "must-see" buzz and repeat business will keep driving it well into the winter.
Among new movies, the vampire flick "Daybreakers" got off to a solid start while "Leap Year" and "Youth in Revolt" were unimpressive.
The James Cameron-directed "Avatar" grossed $48.5 million from Friday through Sunday, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox, down 29% from last weekend. That's a relatively small decline on any weekend and particularly impressive given that this past Friday was a much slower moviegoing day than the previous one, which was a holiday.
Its gross is by far the biggest ever for a film on its fourth weekend and rivals the previous record holder, $28.7 million for Cameron's "Titanic," even accounting for 12 years of ticket price inflation.
"Daybreakers" opened with $15 million, while the Amy Adams-starring vehicle "Leap Year" took in $9 million.

Oh good gosh. Enough already. This movie is horrible!
Loved the movie. I have seen it 3 times.
LMS: You obviously don't understand what makes a movie good, do you?
Oh trust me, Hugh, I definetely understand what makes a movie good (The Blind Side, Up in the Air ... those were good movies) and trust me ... Avatar is not it. Why on earth would anyone want to see a movie about fantasy blue people??
Why LMS?
Because not all people like the same things that you do.
Sometimes people (*gasp*) actually have different tastes than yours. Doesn't mean they are wrong. Doesn't mean you are wrong.
Just means that different individuals like different things.
Not sure who your post was directed to, Carol, but I'll respond.
I know that everyone has different tastes (although I don't know how anyone couldn't like a movie like "The Blind Side" that is a great family film). I didn't say that they were wrong. I was simply saying that a science fiction movie about fantasy blue people isn't my idea of a good movie. I just don't go in for science fiction movies. I prefer movies about "real" (meaning people that could exist in real life not necessarily people that are real people) people (and I know that Avatar has "real" people, but the science fiction and the fantasy blue people aspect just completely turned me off).
Just got back from seeing the movie. I loved it! Anyone who hasn't seen it must see it in 3D. AWESOME!
I'm not sure you realise how racist your comment sounds with all your talk of disliking the movie due to all the 'blue people'.
Did you dislike 'Zulu' due to all the black people?
Feel free to try and dig yourself out of the hole by saying something like 'well that's different, I don't dislike black people' etc etc.
But if you were to say that then essentially you pick and choose which races you like based on the colour of their skin? What kind of an example is that to set as we move into a new decade?
And if you get round that one then I'm sure you'll use the excuse that 'they aren't real'. Does something not being real mitigate the intent of ones statements? And with the immense size of the universe it's very possible that there are blue people out there right now. And what will they find in a year, a decade, a millennium when we finally meet them? A small planet orbiting the sun full of humans like you who dislike blue people.
Thanks.
Er...Mel, James Cameron and Linda Hamilton divorced many, many years ago.
I think Avatar was one of the best movies I have seen in a very long time.. can't wait to by it on DVD...
