Bon Voyage 'Ugly Betty': But why?

america-ferrera-ugly-betty-320.jpgCan it really be?

"Ugly Betty", the breakout hit of the '06 fall season is already taking a bow?

Actually, it can be and it's not a big surprise given the rocky road the series has taken in the last couple years.

Creatively, the show peaked in its stellar second season when it was doing cutting edge comedy with Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams) slamming the beloved Betty White's finger in a cab door and spouting some of the most offensive -- yet so funny -- off color remarks ever heard on network TV.

That was also the year of "Odor In The Court" during which Betty (America Ferrera) fell victim to a poisoned perfume and sped around Mode in some sort of Ecstasy-like high, smelling people's clothes and doing all sorts of weird stuff. Ferrera delivered a comedic performance which screamed "Emmy," an award she'd picked up just a few months prior.

When season three hit, however, the show took a nasty tumble, with story lines that were hard to care about and a lack of that comedy "Betty" had been built on.

Though there were certainly a few stand out episodes in year three which reminded fans of why we loved "Betty," the drama never fully regained its groove.

Getting dumped in a Friday night death slot for its fourth season did not help the situation and, though the show was recently given a shot in ABC's now-hot Wednesday night line up, it was too late to recover.

And so, Betty Suarez's story will end this spring.

ABC has been kind enough to give the creatives behind the show enough time to write a satisfying conclusion to the saga, which is cool. But we can't help wonder, exactly where, how and why this all went so wrong? "Ugly Betty" was once such a vibrant little gem and just three and a half years in, it's being put out to pasture?

How do you feel about this?

this is BS!

the show is awesome again this year after a bad year last year.

so disappointing.

looks like abc is the new nbc.

Yes it gotten better this year but like Korby said, ABC put in Friday death time and by the time they gave it a real shot on Wednesday it was too late to recover. This is ABC's fault, try supporting your shows!

While sad, I'm not terribly surprised. We are talking about the network that canceled Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies and Dirty, Sexy, Money ahead of their time. At least Betty got four full seasons.

Ditto , katie71483

Hit shows aren't dumped into the Friday night deathlot, they earn that distinction. The ratings plumetted too much, so people need to stop blaming ABC. Blame the fans for tuning out or the people who didn't watch (same goes for Daisies, DSM, and Eli Stone). Get over it people!

Sorry to say it but I'm not too surprised. After a wonderful second season, the show lost me as a viewer shortly after the horrible way they ended the Gio storyline. To build the audience up as much as they did ("I want to be the guy" is still one of my all-time favorite TV moments) only to end it the way they did was pretty much a slap in the face to viewers. I may tune in to the finale just to see how they wrap it all up though. Hopefully in a way that will do justice to the show I used to love.

I'll be honest, I watched the first season and that was it. It got old really fast.

Like Korbi said, there was a major creative drop after season two. That is the show's fault, not ABC. Too bad.

Nooooo....Betty is such and awesome show this season. Is ABC crazy???

I liked when the show focused on Betty and her family in Queens. I stopped watching after they got rid of Walter and killed off Santos.
