Bill Simmons: Conan O'Brien's 'Tonight Show' done next week

conan-obrien-320-2.jpgIs "The Tonight Show" as we know it over by next Friday, Jan. 22?

Bill Simmons, an LA-based sports columnist and podcaster for ESPN known as "The Sports Guy" and author of "Now I Can Die in Peace" and "The Book of Basketall," tweeted earlier Thursday (Jan. 14) morning:

FYI: Next week is Conan's final week hosting the Tonight Show. His staff is trying to book big guests so he goes out with a bang. It's true.

Simmons is a veteran of the media landscape and we hardly think he would just go firing off tweets if he didn't have something to back them up. NBC is also rumored to be lining up programming to fill Jay Leno's 10 pm slot, including Jerry Seinfeld's "The Marriage Ref."

NBC has no comment at this time.

Guess his final guests won't be Jerry Seinfeld. Or Jay Leno.

He also workd for Jimmy Kimmel Live for years.

It's a bloody shame. Whatever happened to networks giving shows and hosts time to find an audience? Isn't that what NBC originally did for Conan on Late Night in his 1st couple of years until he caught on. This should be the end of the Tonight Show after this. Who in their right mind would ever watch Jay after this? He really should head for Vegas as suggested by Conan a few nights ago in his bit with Howie Mandell. Let's hope it all works out for the best with Conan staying and Jay going away.

NBC is run by an idiot. What a loss for them. Watching Conan wherever he goes!

best move nbc could have done they are a train wreck late night getting beat by nightline!! come on conan couldn't even beat nightline most nights!!! so now people start watching one everything is put into motion!!! too little too late!! but jay at 11:35 won't be the same either! but should be better ratings than conan!

I love exclamation points, too, jere!!!!

The Execs at NBC are just a joke, no doubt about that.

Do you think Johnny Carson would have got decent ratings if his predecessor, Jack Parr, was given an identical show airing an hour before The Tonight Show started? Leno bled the audience away from the tonight show and made it less relevant with his nightly time slot. If it was only once or twice a week, things may have been different.

NBC brass believes Jay Leno is still their best option for both the short and long term? Wow, they'll believe anything then! As P.T. Barnum supposedly said, there's one born every minute... what a bunch of Peacock suckers!
