'Avatar' sinks 'Titanic's' box-office bounty

avatar-jake-navi-320.jpgMove over, Jack and Rose. "Avatar's" Jake and Neytiri have stolen moviegoers' hearts worldwide.

James Cameron's "Avatar" has surpassed his other theatrical juggernaut "Titanic" as the top-grossing film of all time, earning more than $1.843 billion at the box office worldwide, according to estimates by sources at 20th Century Fox

The live action/CGI movie pulled in nearly $35 million domestic over the weekend, but it's how the film does on foreign shores that gives the big bump.

"Avatar," which has been out for six weeks, is a futuristic tale set in 2154, when humans are mining precious minerals from the moon Pandora and use genetically engineered bodies of Pandora's humanoid species the Na'vi to interact on the natives.

.....but WHY? Seriously. WHY? I just don't get the appeal.

I'm with you td I went to see the movie its nothing but graphics and a washed up story thats been told over and over. But I also think this money making business is overblown I have seen much better movies than Titanic or Avatar that didn't make anything near those amounts. I also don't recall another time where for the past 6 weeks there as been nothing good released to compete(oops I forgot about The Tooth Fairy)

In the words of the great Siskel & Ebert ... TWO THUMBS DOWN!!!

It's all about the ticket prices.

DGH, I think what you said was key. Nothing that could compete with this movie has been released. There are alot of movies out there now that are far and away better films, but for one reason or another they can't knock "Avatar" off its throne. I think originally this movie was supposed to be released in the summer and I think now I understand why they waited to release it. It's competition in the summer would have been fierce and it wouldn't have stayed on top for as long as it has (although it may still have knocked Titanic out of #1 eventually since the ticket prices for the 3-D and 3-D Imax showings of this are quite a bit more than a regular ticket, which, in my opinion, gives it an unfair advantage, but that's for another post/thread).

P.S.: It'll be interesting to see what movie finally knocks it out of 1st place. Any thoughts??

Graphics are the ONLY thing this movie has going for it, seriously...and even they got old after thirty minutes. It is a shame the actual good films don't find this kind of audience... :(

I thought it was a beautiful movie, but the story collapsed on itself with too many references to other movies (including Cameron's own Aliens). A lot of people have become infatuated with the Na'vi and Pandora just as they fell in love with Jack and Rose. But ticket prices were cheaper 13 years ago... I saw it once and I'll get the Blu-Ray eventually, but I have no real desire to see it again. I just hope they don't use this as justification to make every movie 3-D. That effect got boring after the first 30 minutes of Avatar, and headache inducing after 45.

Factor in 12 years of inflation ON TOP of a higher ticket price for 3D, and it still hasn't touched Titanic. In terms of attendance, it's not even close.

Fox's estimates were just a little ahead of of the actual numbers. It's currently 10 million short of beating Titanic worldwide. I have no doubt that next weekend will push it over the edge.

I thought it was a good movie but nothing to warrant beating Titanic. I'm thinking with inflation and everyone paying up to 5 bucks extra for those 3-D glasses made a huge difference.
