'American Idol': Mary J. Blige -- how'd she do?
Wednesday's "American Idol" welcomed R&B diva Mary J. Blige to Atlanta. How did she do as a guest judge? While first guest judge Victoria Beckham exceeded our expectations by being friendly and personable, Mary J. Blige was a disappointment for us by being giggly and silly. We thought Mary J. would come to Atlanta and drop the hammer on contestants, but instead she dissolved into giggles more than she critiqued (at least from what we could see).
Don't get us wrong -- there were funny things happening on last night's "Idol." Pants on the ground, pants on the ground. Lookin' like a fool with your pants on the ground! But we were expecting a little more professional insight from a singer the caliber of Mary J. Blige.
Many of the commenters on the recap thought she was rude, but we disagree. She wasn't necessarily rude (or any ruder than "Idol" judges always are) but we thought we'd get more musical opinions out of her.

It's not that she was rude...I just felt she didn't contribute at all and looked totally disinterested in being there. Loved Victoria Beckham!
Neither Mary J. Blige or Victoria Beckham did anything worthwhile on Idol. All Beckham did was talk about "style and appearance" and Mary J. didn't even do that. I don't think either of them contributed anything other than being a "seat filler". Why were they even there? Let's see how any of the others do...
i agree with linda. she wasn't rude, she just didn't contribute. if anything she worked hard to *not* be rude. kara's theatrics and randy's loud laughter were worse than mary j. who at least attempted to hide her laughter and apoligized multiple times for it.
i like mary j. but she has proved again and again that when she's not performing, she's very introverted and doesn't really have a lot of personality. i'm sure she's a perfectly nice person and given that she tried to be polite she at least came across that way on the show, but she wasn't entertaining. i look forward to chenoweth and NPH. hopefully they won't disappoint the way the first two have, but you never know.
I didn't watch the first night- other things on and do not like Victoria Beckham- glad to hear she was more personable on the show- Mary J was only a little interested in the people that were pretty good- all in all I thought that the whole crew was more mean spirited than I have ever seen them and that's going some-
If anyone is still unaware of the hype that accompanies American Idol, look no further at the veritable onslaught of hype articles written by the zap2it staff.
While AI has high ratings and certainly deserves a lot of coverage, the ridiculous tsunami of empty hype given away by zap2it (and the rest of the press) is just ridiculous.
I also agree with Linda. I was looking forward to some solid and interesting commentary from Mary J. Blige. Rudeness might have at least been more interesting that what we ended up with.
some people may say she was rude but i think she wasn't necessarily rude. some people who go to idol suck so it's not entirely her fault. she should have said more but some people must not waste the judges time, their time, and America's time. i have to admit their kinda funny but they should listen to themselves.
mjb just reacted to the situation and wasn't laughing as hard as i was. i don't think she did bad. she just forgot to talk and when she did, you saw what happened with the black guy who got taken by security.
if you were a professional singer looking for some talent and you see that, come on people. the next star of America. of 250 million people. though i have to admit, she looked kind of bored. :(
For someone of her talent, experience, and time spent in the industry she should have had more to say. I thought she was boring and looked bored and disinterested. Like she was looking for her next best artist.
She should stick to singing. She lost a little credibility as an artist last night. She had nothing to say that was in any way constructive or intuative. She seemed silly and immature.
I am not interested in Mary J Blige... people who engage in domestic violence do not deserve public forums. Please go away.
