Taylor Lautner on 'SNL' gets hairy, keeps shirt on

"Twilight: New Moon's" Taylor Lautner got pretty hairy on "Saturday Night Live" ... but not as a shapeshifter.The 17-year-old movie star instead donned a few different wigs for his guest hosting stint, and for the most part, he was a good sport and pretty entertaining.
In particular, we give props to Lautner for playing a girl. Yes. Mr. Rippling Musculature Washateria Abs Lautner went femme for a laugh, and we have to give it to him. His performance itself wasn't hilarious necessarily, but the situation sure was.
In the skit, he plays Mariana, a fangirl with long, brown flowing locks who is firmly on Team Edward and even has a binder with Rob Pattinson's face on it. His -- we mean her -- nemesis is a girl who is on Team Jacob. Best line? When Lautner declares skeptically, "If those abs are real then the dude who plays Jacob deserves an Oscar."
We also enjoyed a few other parts of the show, especially his opening monologue. Okay, we liked it mainly because he showed off some of his martial arts skills and his pretend defense of Taylor Swift from Kanye West. So Swift did make a cameo on the show, albeit in standee form. The Dish Rag thinks this was a great way to handle those dating rumors.
Lautner also donned a blond wig for a show choir sequence, which isn't remotely as cute as "Glee," but does allow him to throw himself into an oddball character with various costume changes. It's awkward and not that funny, but we still liked seeing him look and sound so different.
In the football taping skit, Lautner really goes for it, and when it's just you and the camera, that's not that easy. He did a decent job.
Finally, we also liked the frozen yogurt shop skit. It was kind of cute seeing him be a shy teen, but we also loved Kenan Thompson's gliding entrances and musical interludes. Is it any wonder Thompson is one of Zap2it's Underrated stars of 2009?
All in all, we think Taylor has lots of physical comedy skills. He's game for anything and obviously loves what he does. Good on you, Taylor.
So far, video of the Team Edward/Team Jacob skit hasn't been made available. We'll post as soon as it's up.

Great to see Taylor let his hair down and have some fun! Takes a great man to do that!
Worst episode of the season, maybe even worse than january jones.
Funniest part came from Armisen's native american comedian on WU.
Lets get one host in here who is actually older than 20. So far this season only one host, Gerard Butler has been older than the show itself. Pathetic Lorne Michaels.
Lautner surprised me. Althought the writing was bad, he really did the best he could. A great sport and knows how to laught at himself.
Pretty bad stuff. He has no comedic timing at all, and his neck is soooooooo long that it is distracting.
Yuck.
Everything about the show stunk except for Taylor Lautner. Thought he did comedy well (considering the crappy skits and scripts) and he was enjoyable to watch.
Again, and again, and again, SNL makes me miss MadTV even more.
I thought Taylor Lautner was hillarious! He was able to poke fun at himself and not take himself too seriously. You have to remember he's only 17. He had great poise. I agree he good physical comedy skills, too. I also agree that Kenan Thompson is one of this year's most underrated comedians on SNL. I enjoyed the show!
i am not a teenager. i am not a girl. and honestly, i knew i was going to hate this episode of SNL & i really thought he'd be the male equivalent of January Jones.
i was wrong. he actually was the second best host this season (next to taylor swift).
sadly, these two delivered the funniest material this season... shows how much the writing needs improvement. as a long-time, avid SNL watcher, i was decently impressed.
Bon Jovi was the musical guest, and they did not do a Jon Bovi sketch in "Weekend Update". What's the deal? Bon Jovi didn't want Jon Bovi?Jon Bovi does opposite or alternative versions of songs. For instance the Jon Bovi version of Katy Perry's "Waking Up In Vegas" would be called "Sleep Down Out Atlantic City". LOL
