'So You Think You Can Dance': Russell on performing without his partner twice
Russell Ferguson made "So You Think You Can Dance" history this week, becoming the first finalist to lose his partner to injury twice, being forced to perform with last second fill-ins.
You may recall that this went down back in October when Noelle Marsh hurt her knee and had to sit the first week of competition out. Russell performed a ballroom number with choreographer Melanie Lapatin in her place.
This week, the kid had to do a Shane Sparks hip hop routine and a Nakul Dev Mahajan Bollywood piece sans a sling-armed Ashleigh.
Korbi TV caught up with Russell backstage after Wednesday's results show -- during which he was the first to learn that he'd been voted into next week's finale -- where he commented on the crazy situation: "It was complicated because, you know, it's very nerve-wracking coming on to the stage, just all those people screaming your name, and then [on top of that] you have to dance with somebody you never danced with before."
Russell said that he just made sure his mind was focused and that he knew his part, regardless. And that he did, killing both numbers.
Surprising, considering he had practically no preparation with his replacement partners. "We ran through [the routines] a few times before show time," Russell explained. "But not long at all. Less than an hour... so it's really hard. And plus, me and Ashleigh built a good chemistry and that would've shown on the stage... But, you know, things happen."
Things happen indeed, but Russell really handled himself well, truly earning that spot in the finale.
Listen in as he and fellow-finalist Kathryn talk about this past week...
Is one of these kids going to be the season 6 winner? What do you think?

That's the mark of someone who'll go really far. A true professional has to roll with unexpected changes and still be able to pull it out. Russell has a very good chance of winning this season.
I agree with you, Leanne, Russell has a very good chance of winning this one. He is truly a professional it seems. Good for him.
It's Kathryn, not Katherine.
Nice interview, they both seem very nice and are wonderful dancers. I'm rooting for them to be the top 2.
If they didn't film it live, then Ashleigh could have probably performed. Or do they not film it live?
