'Sherlock Holmes' smashes Christmas Day box office record
According to early estimates, "Sherlock Holmes" demolished the previous Christmas Day opening box office record for North America.Narrowly edging out last week's premiere "Avatar" at $23.5 million, "Sherlock Holmes" took in $24.9 million on Friday, Dec. 25, trouncing the former Dec. 25 opening record of $14.4 million, set in 2008 by "Marley and Me." "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squekquel" came in at third with $14.5 million. "Alvin" actually opened on Wednesday, so this brings its total gross to $41.3 million.
"It's Complicated" finished fourth with only $7.1 million. We have to think this movie, nominated for three Golden Globes, will end up doing more business as the holiday season continues. "Up in the Air" brought up the rear in fifth place with $3.7 million. This was the first weekend of nationwide release for "Up in the Air" -- it opened on Dec. 4 in 15 theaters around the country.

Actually the record was set by "Meet The Fockers" back in 2004. On Christmas Day, MTF took in $19,542,490. "Sherlock Holmes" and "Avatar" beat the record, but "Alvin and the Chipmunks 2: The Squeakquel" did not.
MTF didn't OPEN on Christmas Day. It opened on Dec. 22nd.
AVATAR is a very good movie!
like most Guy Ritchie movies, utterly incomprehensible! :(
I comprehended Sherlock Holmes just fine. The crowd in the almost packed theater I saw in seemed to be having a good time.
Avatar is an inferior version of Dances with Wolves. As with most Cameron movies, it's all about the technology. Story takes a backseat to the eye-candy. Cameron should let someone else do the writing.

Crack analysis there! Then again, with the execrable Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep, most people in fly over country might sagely do something else.
