'Glee's' high and low notes: Amber Riley's Mercedes

amberriley.jpgNext Wednesday, December 9th, "Glee" will finish the first half of its inaugural season, not returning to our TVs until next April. To toast the freshman series before its extended hiatus, we're counting down the characters' high and low notes. On tap today? Mercedes Jones...

High Note: Hairography's "Imagine" performance
We all know Mercedes can blow. The girl's got pipes. And she's had several shining moments on the series to show them off. But her highest note in our book was during "Glee"'s recent "Hairography" episode when she briefly softened that star quality. A visiting choir, made up entirely of deaf students, was doing their rendition of "Imagine" for McKinley's kids and Mercedes stood up to join them in an impromptu collaboration. But instead of overpowering their performance with her spectacular talents, she toned it down, allowing the deaf choir to truly shine as she humbly sang beside them, showing her support. If you missed the moment, you can watch it below.

Low Note: Mercedes jacks up Kurt's automobile
The girl threw a rock through the windshield of Kurt's car because he wasn't interested in being her man. "Se-KUR-ity!" Mercedes has clearly got some anger and aggression issues -- not to mention being a bit clueless... the boy is into other boys, hello! -- But we'll forgive her. We got to watch her sing "I Bust The Windows Out" because of it, so it's all good.

Before The Fat Lady Sings: Kind of want to know a more about what makes Mercedes tick, maybe get friendly with her parents, have her chase a viable love interest... And if we could see a couple more showstoppers from her, that would be good too. A subdued Mercedes may have been her "highest note" so far, but seeing that once was plenty. The more opportunities she gets to let her light shine, the better.

Have any other best and worst Mercedes Jones moments in mind?

My lowest point for Mercedes was telling Puck to get over the fact that Quinn has chosen Finn. It's Puck's freakin' baby. He has some rights --- or should. And Quinn is playing Finn for a fool (which, admittedly, he is somewhat), which isn't fair to him, either.

I gotta agree with Steve. The babydaddy talk with Puck was out of line and he should have some say in how he can interact with his son.

I do hope we get more Mercedes backstory and character development. Right now, she just exists as the 2nd female singer behind Rachel.

Her low moment is anytime she has to say more then 3 sentences, still needs work on the acting.

Singing is fine, acting needs work.

We got to watch her sing "I Bust The Windows Out" because of it

We did? All I can remember from that scene was a dozen cheerleaders dancing in bikinis and knee-high socks. :)

I noticed that at 2:31 Pucks jacket is off all of a sudden after being on the whole time.

I know this has nothing to do with the question, but i like catches continuity errors.

I'd say that the Imagine performance was equally a low a moment-- I know that the McKinley High kids are all about singing together and joining in on stuff, but the deaf school choir were in the middle of a awesome-on-its-own PERFORMANCE, and Mercedes thinks it's totally okay to just get up and start singing over their voices because she couldn't control herself. If that happened in real life, it would be considered extremely rude, regardless of how awesome they sounded together.

Yeah for me the imagine performance was a low because she just jumped into that great performance for the deaf kids. A High Note? Hate on me. Girl has PIPES. Actually better, was just her one moment in Somebody to Love. Another Low was the whole thing wth Puck. He wants to be involved with his kid. And its okay for Quinn to put that on Finn??? Who has no idea??? Ugh.

Yeah, low moment was the Puck/baby situation. Terrible advice. Not sure who would give such advice... maybe more info on her background would make sense of that... does she have a dead beat dad?

I think the bad advice may come around again. She doesnt know Finn has never had sex with Quinn. So maybe when she realize how badly Quinn lied, she'll apologize. That scene really bugged me... we'll see how it ends up.

yup maybe she thinks they were both having sex with Quinn so it could be Finn's baby OR Puck's...
