'Flight of the Conchords' is grounded

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie, who starred in and co-created HBO's "Flight of the Conchords," say there won't be a third season of the show.

In a statement posted on the Conchords web site Thursday, McKenzie, Clement and co-creator James Bobin say they "like the way the show ended" and are leaving it at that. They've spoken in the past about the difficulty of writing songs to fit the show's episodes -- which contributed to the 16-month gap between the first and second season on HBO.

Here's the full statement from the Conchords site:

"We've noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won't be returning for a 3rd season. We're very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We'd like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist."
While I would have loved to see more of the Conchords on HBO, I have to respect the fact that Clement, McKenzie and Bobin are happy with how they went out and won't try to milk the show any further. And we'll always have "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros."

I'm devastated.

PLEASE say it isnt so! Great, instant legen- wait for it- dary series like this get whacked or "decided" to end yet botched abortions like Scrubs go on and on and on,,I guess Billy Joel said it best,,Only the Good Die Young!

"Scrubs" is just as good as "Flight of the Conchords".

Not sure how you can love one and hate on the other. They're both SO GOOD!

Anyway, I respect the boys for not wanting the trouble of doing another season of the show. And it did end pretty hilariously -- out of NYC and back in NZ.

I think he meant that "Scrubs" was a good show that just went on for waaaay too long and became painfully un-funny in its present incarnation.

While I'm sad to see FOTC go, I'm glad it went out on a high note.

I'm very happy to hear this news. As much as I'll miss new episodes of the show, British television has shown us that making limited, quality series where the writing remains strong is much better than keeping a property on life support simply because it is popular. Now these guys can work on some other interesting, creative and entertaining project.

Although I am sad that there will be no more of the season, I am glad that they've stopped it where they left it. It was a great run. A GREEEEAAAAT run. I completely agree that shows like The Office (U.S. version) have gone on far too long whereas The Office (U.K. original) stopped just where it needed too. We can just watch both seasons of this wonderful show over and over....

What a sad day for comedy! FOTC was probably the most original comedy on TV! Absolutely hilarious!

And I'm really sick of people who stop liking shows for really no reason other than "it went on too long". Yes, some shows really run out of steam (Simpsons), but not everything. Stop thinking it's cool to dislike a show after 3 years.

People always say "Scrubs" went on too long. I ask if they've watched it, and they say "Not in 5 seasons". So how the hell would you know???

To reply to replies from my comment, no, I meant Scrubs DID go on way too long, like after the first episode! I never liked it, but for those "Scrubbies" who did, -hey, I respect your opinion, but it just goes to show that some people even like mushrooms too, so liking botched abortion Scrubs doesnt prove anything! As it were, FOTC has died an OHH TOO SOON death, so there!

I respect their decision to end the show where it is, but I really hope that they stay together and keep doing New Zealand satirical folk music (as crowded a genre as that is) instead of more solo, 'serious' stuff like Jemaine in Gentlemen Broncos.
