Holy crap, guys. The Trinity Killer killed Rita and left Harrison sitting in her blood. Dexter's life has come full circle. He was born in blood in the shipping container where his mother was murdered and now Harrison was born in blood in the bathroom where his own mother was murdered. The one nice "out" they have in not making Harrison a serial-killer-in-training is that he's significantly younger than Dexter was when it happened to him -- Harrison is only like a year old and Dexter was 5 or 6 years old. We can all buy that Harrison is not as psychologically affected as Dexter was.
The other big "reveal" was Deb's finding out that the Ice Truck Killer was Dexter's half-brother. Has she put it together yet that
There are so many questions about next season. What will happen to Astor and Cody? Will they stay in Dexter's life or go to live with their grandparents? Will he be a single dad to Harrison? What about the Mitchell family? Did anybody else think Dexter's cover was blown right then and there when they got taken out of their house? There HAS to be some resolution with that, one would think.
Just on a personal note, two things:
Once I heard about the "big twist" at the end of "Dexter," I figured one of two things would happen: That Trinity would kill Dexter's family or that Dexter would kill his OWN family. Gruesome, to be sure, but not completely out of the realm of possibility for this show. I'm glad they went with option A. I love this show but I'm not sure I could go on rooting for a child killer.
Secondly, as much as I'm sad about Rita's death from the perspective of her three children and Dexter, I'm not that sad to see her go. I've never really liked Rita and I also can't wait to see how this plays out in the world of the show.
Finally, not to shill for Showtime or anything, but there is a live chat with John Lithgow tomorrow on the official site at 3 pm ET, noon PT. I'm going to drop by if I can, I think he did a masterful job this season. And I can't believe we have to wait until September for season five! Damn you, premium channels and your seasons that are only thirteen episodes long!

Showtime should get props for not showing any promos over the end credits and music. Sort of like the silent countdown clock on 24. I really needed just the Dexter music to help that really sink in.
I feel awful because I've complained about Rita and wished her dead, but now I feel really bad that I got what I wanted.
You are Wrong.
Dexter and Debra are NOT Half-Siblings.
Watch season 1 again.
I think they did a disservice killing Rita. It would have been interesting seeing him more comfortable in the role of family man and maybe the light of Rita and the kids love would start eating away at his dark passanger.
Debra is going to feel like crap, I can only assume that everyone will think the serial killer killed Rita because he thought she was debra morgan (the lead investigator on his case) or to get back at Debra.
I wonder if Cody and Astor will go live with the grandparents and get written out of the show. Did Dexter ever adopt them?
Great show, I can't wait to watch again. I feel bad for Dexter and the kids that Rita is gone. What a twist! I can't wait to see next year's show. I wonder if the series will take Astor and Cody the same direction as the book or if that is too dark.
WOW!...
I have no idea what to make for the future of this series. It smelled like a final season at point where Dexter is contemplating conquering and shelving the dark passenger.
I probably would have been happier with Dexter and Rita's relationship ending in divorce, as opposed to a tragic demise that can potentially traumatize Harrison.
Harrison turning out OK would prove Dexter the monster is capable of doing good.
WOW!
Good ending.
I didn't hate Rita but I was crazy about her either but sad see her lose a job though.
I was expecting Rita and the baby to be killed on the plane ride to Key West.
Debra Morgan is not Dexter Moser brother.
I told a friend of mine that John Litgow had it in his contract that he must be naked several to the end and what do you know... he dies naked.
You're right, Kyle. I had completely forgotten they resolved that issue. That's what happens when it's so long between seasons! I fixed the piece.
Dexter and Deb are half siblings? Did I miss something? When was that disclosed?
I thought about Trinity killing Rita but didn't think they would actually do it on the show! Great twist and really sets up next year. I think Cody and Astor stay with Dexter and Harrison.
Another great season from the best show on tv (well, Dexter and "The Office"). Can't wait until next season.
Oh Nice, cool
Dexter's legal troubles should just be beginning.
Consider how soon the Mitchell family will tell the cops about "Kyle Butler," the man who attacked their father in front of them, and how soon Dexter will be identified as Butler.
Consider how Arthur's disappearance will look to the cops then... and who the lead suspect in Rita's murder will be at that point, especially given what Debra now knows.
I'm not sure WTF Dexter was thinking in building those crazy links to the Mitchells -- eating Thanksgiving dinner with the family of a future victim at his house?!? -- but this show has taken a serious turn away from common sense. The Code has been all but forgotten this year.
