'Dexter's' Julie Benz hasn't watched the whole finale yet
Julie Benz spoke with Pink is the New Blog for an in-depth interview about the "Dexter" season finale. Spoilers after the jump, so don't keep reading if you haven't watched it yet.Apparently actress Julie Benz has not even watched the "Dexter" finale in its entirety. She was watching the broadcast with friends but as the ending neared, she made a few jokes and excused herself. We can totally understand.
The most interesting part of the interview for us was when Benz was asked if she would return as a sort-of ghost, the way Dexter's father does. She responded:
I wouldn't want to do anything that seemed cheesy or hokey or that took away from the impact that Rita's death had. However, we have the most amazing writers on Dexter and they never deliver anything cheesy or hokey, so if there was a discussion about it and they wanted Rita to make an appearance and I felt that it served a purpose and made sense, of course I'd be back. It's my family.
This really got our wheels turning about the possibilities for next season. It is completely plausible (and not at all cheesy, in our humble opinion) that Dexter would be haunted by Rita in his mind. She is essentially a victim of the life he leads and he did love her, as much as he is able to love. Harry may be his guide but Rita would be like Dexter's conscience. Do we think he should start having two "ghosts" following him around all the time? Of course not. But we don't think a few guest appearances by Julie Benz would be completely ridiculous and in fact, might prove really powerful.
The entire interview is a 24-minute audio file over at Pink is the New Blog and it's definitely worth a listen, so please check it out.

I would bring Lithgow and Benz back to show how Rita was murdered in Dexter's mind. That would be the only way her return would not be cheesy.
I love Julie Benz and don't blame her, but Rita was just an annoying character. Having her return as a nagging ghost would just be even more annoying...
why? what happened to rita?
Please, Kris, you can't be that retarded!
I feel that character, Rita is maintains the balance that Dexter needs. Without her Dexter's character comes off as just another ordinary psycho serial killer. Personally, unless the new season starts off with Dexter just having something like a nightmare, my interest in the show will come to a screeching halt.
Yeah, killing Rita was a huge mistake. I was thinking the same thing- I don't care how, bring her back. Nightmare, time machine, whatever. Dexter screwing around with Trinity all season was the one flaw of the show and it ended up really screwing up my interest in next season.
Dexter's ego (I'll get Trin later, I can learn from him, I can balance family and my hobby, I got everything under control) ultimately killed Rita and I can see her coming back to remind him of his mistake, although it would be fair to argue that Harry already fills that role.
Rita helped Dexter reach that point, like anybody who has an 'addiction' to admit that he could eventually part with the 'Dark Passenger' a breakthough that he might not ever achieve again. If he falls in love or dates again - either due to REAL affection or to cover up - I can see her appearing again to remind him it doesn't work.
i think it would be interesting for her to return. in the season finale it was failry obvious that dexter was ready to let his dark passenger rest, permanently. i think that it would make sense if rita came back during the final season as a figment of dexter's imagination to help him finally let go of his demons.
i dont really think killing off rita was right for the show. rita allowed him to be more relatable. her and deb allowed him to have human connections and not some killer you can't relate with. great show, im sure they'll make it work. just disappointed.
I would love it if Rita came back as almost her Darla persona from Angel. I could totally picture Dexter having reconciled with the ghost of Harry, who wanted him to be a loner, and now being forced to reconcile with his conscience which would be the ghost of Rita. Just like the ghost of Harry was much harsher than the actual Harry, maybe the ghost of Rita could become so harsh that it could echo Benz's performance of Darla.
