'American Idol': Actors want Jennifer Hudson out of Mandela film
South African actors want to stop Jennifer Hudson playing Nelson Mandela's wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, reports said Monday.
The Creative Workers Union of South Africa said using foreign actors to tell the country's stories undermined efforts to develop the national film industry.
"It can't happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood and yet bring in imports," the union's president Mabutho Sithole said in The Citizen newspaper.
"This decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now," union secretary general Oupa Lebogo said in The Times. "If the matter doesn't come up for discussion, we will push for a moratorium to be placed on the film."
Hudson landed the role of Madikizela-Mandela in November.
The film will be directed by South African film-maker Darrell J. Roodt, whose films include "Cry, The Beloved Country" and "Sarafina."
Madikizela-Mandela campaigned for her husband's release during his 27-year imprisonment in the apartheid era. She separated from Nelson Mandela in 1992, two years after he was out of prison.

They would be so lucky to have Hudson be in the movie. it will probably lead to a higher gross.
I think they'd benefit from having her in with the rest of the production and cast being South Africans. There needs to be at least one big name if they want it to gain any financial and award momentum in the states.

Sounds shortsighted to me. Justice and Robbi are right on the money. But, you know what? South Africa only wants South African actors. Fine. J.K. Rowling wanted only British actors for the Harry Potter movies. Great. Let's see how other countries would fair if we instituted an "American Actor Only" policy for our movies. Foreign actors want the opportunity to be cast in Hollywood movies and their respective countries want the money Hollywood movies spend shooting in their countries. Can't have it both ways -- invest in our country but use only our actors.

This too insane to even give credit to. Whoever fits the part the best should get the part. Worry about stopping all the bad stuff like raping children and women, Aids and wreckless killing in africa instead of freaking out who gets what movie part. For God sakes! Where are your priorities!!!!!!?
