ABC puts 'Scrubs,' 'Better Off Ted' in burnoff mode

scrubs-ted-320.jpgABC is apparently in a hurry to finish off the seasons of its two struggling Tuesday comedies, "Scrubs" and "Better Off Ted."

The network has scheduled episodes of both shows to run in primetime on New Year's Day, and starting Jan. 5, viewers will get a double dose of "Scrubs" and "Ted" on Tuesday nights -- including opposite the premiere of "American Idol" on Jan. 12. The network is also airing original episodes the next two weeks, which is typically a lightly viewed time.

It all adds up to a rapid run through the bulk of the two shows' orders for the season. By Jan. 12 "Scrubs" will have aired 11 of its 18 episodes and "Ted" will have gone through 10 of its 13. ABC hasn't set its schedule beyond that week.

Both series have had meager showings in the ratings so far. The first four episodes of "Scrubs" have averaged only about 5 million viewers (pending DVR additions), while "Better Off Ted" premiered to 3.8 million viewers last week and dipped to just 3.2 million on Tuesday.

ABC still has a couple of midseason shows it has yet to give homes: The Alyssa Milano comedy "Romantically Challenged," which seems like a good bet to join the Wednesday lineup, and the drama "Happy Town." Whether the network would put a new series against the twin juggernauts of "Idol" and "NCIS" on Tuesdays remains to be seen.

Bummer. Gave up on Scrubs a while back, but I've gotten into Better Off Ted. Kind of reminds me of a sitcom version of "Eureka". Very offbeat, sly humor unlike any other comedy on network TV, no wonder it's tanking; should've been a cable show perhaps.

Guess ABC figures Ted will be better off dead.

Thankkkkk god. Im not really fond of the new scrubs and scrubs is one of my fav shows.

Good! Now I can pretend like season 9 of Scrubs never happened! Too bad about Better Off Ted though...

I'm actually digging the new Scrubs, but either way, it's too bad that so few viewers have even bothered to try "Better Off Ted." Maybe ABC should try airing episodes of it during the Wednessday comeday block for a while (since there's a free spot after Hank got canceled).

That sucks about Ted, but I was amazed that it had been picked up for a second season. It seems that comedies without a laugh track confuse the average viewer.

As for Scrubs, well...I've seen about six episodes ever, and I never laughed once. I suppose it could be because I didn't watch it regularly; sometimes to get some of the humor you have to know the characters. Still, I never saw anything that I considered even remotely funny. I know a lot of people liked it though, so I'm guessing that it just wasn't my kind of humor. Kind of like The Three Stooges or I Love Lucy...I never thought there was anything funny about either of those, either. They were actually kind of painful to watch, because they were trying SO hard to be funny, but weren't.

But like I say, it's probably just me. I loved Arrested Development, and it got canceled twice because I was apparently the only person watching.

Scrubs could go, as far as I'm concerned. However, Better off Ted should be moved to Wednesday and matched up with The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town. Ted is funny, satirical and off-beat (which makes it prime for to be cancelled, if only because a good percentage of American's think Dancing With the Stars is fun. Bleh).

As there are differing numbers are reported (Futon Critic, TV Guide): Sure, that SCRUBS hat 18 episodes ordered, not 13?

I really wish that ABC hadn't brought back Scrubs now as they likely won't get a chance to close the series again.

Better Off Ted was in a no win situation, happy that it was brought back, but it was never going to bring in even average numbers. It too likely won't get a proper close to the series, although seeing as it will have made only 26 eps at its conclusion, perhaps it shouldn't get one. Too bad b/c it truly was one of the funniest (if not the funniest) shows on tv right now.

You selfish, ******* prick. Just because you don't like it, you're thanking god that it's leaving? What scum.

@ What's wrong with you?

And a Merry Christmas to you too! And, may I say, you need to change the last word in your name from "you" to "me" ... just saying.
