'Twilight: New Moon': Team Edward vs Team Jacob equals no contest

Maybe the "Twilight: New Moon" fans can help straighten me out -- I just don't see a contest between these teams. Edward wins, hands down.Sure, Taylor Lautner may be so preternaturally beautiful that all we do when we look upon his visage is weep. But he's only 17, so that can't be an excuse.
Let me give you some background: I haven't seen "Twilight" yet and obviously "New Moon" isn't out. I just started reading the series because I like to have read the books before I see the movie adaptation. Now that I've read "Twilight," "New Moon" and "Eclipse," ("Breaking Dawn" will be finished this week), I don't understand the Team Edward/Team Jacob phenomenon.
The books make it perfectly clear that Edward is the one for Bella. He's her soulmate. They were irrevocably drawn to one another; they complete one another. There has never been any indication that Bella has those kinds of feelings for Jacob. There IS no love triangle. She even very explicitly compares Jacob to Paris from "Romeo & Juliet." If Edward never came back, Bella could see herself settling for Jacob because he would make her happy. But the key word is "settling." There was NO spark there, not from her end.
On top of Bella's feelings, there's the fact that Edward starts to handle Jacob much more maturely than Jacob handles Edward. Edward is supportive of Bella and her happiness. You cannot say the same about Jacob. He is much more insensitive towards her feelings, being blinded by family tales and prejudice.
Maybe my opinion will change when I read "Breaking Dawn." Maybe the movies portray these relationships as more of a love triangle. But as it stands right now, having read the first three books in the "Twilight" saga -- it's the difference between loving someone and being IN LOVE with someone. I just don't see how anyone can think Bella belongs with Jacob.

THANK YOU! I have never understood the "contest." Bella explicitly says that she can not exist without Edward and she even wishes Jacob was her biological brother so they can just be friends like she wants it to be. If anything, I think anyone who thinks Bella should be with Jacob has some serious issues considering how physicall and emotionally abusive he is to her all through out Eclipse and in the beginning of Breaking Dawn.
I would just like to thank you Andrea, for actually putting this opinion out there because it seems like both in the fandom, and in the media, they trade using common sense for drooling over some child with his shirt off. And trust me, Breaking Dawn only reinforces Edward/Bella even more actually makes everything that happened in Eclipse completely irrelevant.
Just wanted to give you some love. The media and Summit are trying to make this out to be some HUGE triangle when it wasn't written that way at all. Jacob manipulated Bella based on her guilt over being her friend when she felt she had none in NM. She never loved him in a romantic sense. The kid was just a total a-hole. The entire point of NM was that Bella could NEVER, ever handle living without Edward.. and he could never live without her again either. There was no triangle just because Jacob wanted to force himself on her.
You can't imagine how happy I am that you understand that Bella and Edward BELONG TOGETHER and that there really is no competition between Jacob and Edward. Not only has Bella compared Jacob to Paris, but she even expressed the desire to have him as a brother in New Moon which, to me, shows that her feelings towards him are far from romantic. There's no point to the teams especially when Edward wins in the end and was always going to win. The movie's portrayal of a "love triangle" is undoubtedly to cause turmoil within the fandom, arising ingroup bias and team loyalty that will help Summit sell their team products.
And I definitely have to agree with you on the fact that Edward is more mature which is one of his greatest appeals for me. He accepted (more quickly) her connection to and friendship with the Quileute members while Jacob completely disregards (due to his own bias distaste) how significant the Cullens are to Bella and how much of a family they are to her.

thank god, there are still sane people out there who get the books. i hate that everybody is trying to make bella looks like someone who cant decide whom she wants to be with. she never, not for a single second, wanted to choose jacob over edward. there was no love triagle ever!! and i really dont like the fact that people say she should be with jake since obviously she clearly doesnt want to. so thank you thank you thank you!!!! i wish some moe people would stand up for edward and bella and their choice and their love!!!!
Three points:
1) Who cares?
2) Is it impossible to like BOTH characters?
3) Lautner is hands-down hotter than Pattinson.
THANK YOU! I sometimes think that some people are reading different books to me! It was always obvious that she was gonna be with Edward, she might have gotten close to but she could never live without Edward. So anyways, I just wanted to thank you for not riding the Fail train like the rest if the media seem to be doing.
While I agree that the books are hands-down Edward, wait until you actually watch the first movie - Pattinson as Edward definitely makes me LESS Team Edward. Not that I can't separate the book from the movie, but I'm curious to see what New Moon - with a new director/writer, I have some hope - will do for my opinions on that debate.
I agree with Andrea also. 100%!!!! Jacob is very rude and childish to Bella and Edward. Edward seems to care more about her happiness, and is very sincere. Looks have nothing to do with love.
