'Twilight: New Moon' mania rakes in $140 million opening weekend
'Twilight: New Moon's' gross of $140.7 million puts it at third all-time for an opening weekend. It pulled in $258.8 worldwide, according to studio estimates.Only "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million) and "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) have had bigger opening weekends than "Twilight: New Moon." Interestingly, "New Moon" bested "The Dark Knight's" opening day by $5 million but slowed down that torrid pace the rest of the weekend.
Either way, it's still a huge haul for the Summit Entertainment flick. The take for "New Moon's" opening weekend was projected to be right around $100 million, which the film was fast-approaching after its first day. "New Moon" is also well on its way to passing the TOTAL gross of its predecessor "Twilight," at $193 million.
The Sandra Bullock-Tim McGraw football movie "The Blind Side" was second at the box office this weekend, pulling in $34.5 million. We've heard pretty good things about it. With how thin the field is for Best Actress nominees this year, could we get to March and have to start calling her "Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock?" Keanu Reeves has his fingers crossed.
Finally, "2012," which opened last weekend, finished third at the box office with $26.5 million. Its total is now at $108.2 million domestically. If you haven't seen it yet, "SNL" did a great "2012" trailer spoof Saturday night.

What a sad day. I just lost all respect for moviegoers.
Andrea, why do you choose to perpetuate the myth that there is a shortage of candidates for Best Actress this year? I could probably name 15 without thinking.
I really do want you to answer this question. What makes you call this year's Lead Actress field "thin"?
Via the Hollywood Reporter:
In the best actress field, there's a single Oscar perennial (Meryl Streep, for "Julie & Julia"), some buzzed-about newcomers (Carey Mulligan and Gabourey Sidibe for "An Education" and "Precious," respectively) and ... that's pretty much it for the front-runners.
The women toplining the season's two costume dramas, Emily Blunt and Abbie Cornish in "The Young Victoria" and "Bright Star," respectively, are in the mix, along with Penelope Cruz fron "Broken Embraces," though none is generating loads of talk. You can throw in Hilary Swank, but with "Amelia" drawing mixed reviews, she could face a tough road.
Meanwhile, there are some unknown quantities in movies that have yet to screen widely: Saoirse Ronan in "The Lovely Bones," Helen Mirren in "The Last Station" and the women in the ensemble cast of "Nine." But without a consensus, and without even knowing if these actresses notch enough screen time to be considered leads, it's hard to regard them at this point as strong contenders.
How shallow is the pool? Some are talking about performances such as Sandra Bullock's in the feel-good film "The Blind Side."
Nicolas, what are your 15?
I have lost faith in humanity.
The new film sounded promising untill I herd a radio interview saying that a LOT of the book has been missed out from the film. Sounds like anyone who has read the book is in for a bad night!
I heard the leading lady herself say the same thing!
Anyone who has read the books and watched the movies should be puking right now!!! This movie F****** sucks!!! The actors are bad, the director is bad, They leave out extremely important details from the books!!! They are ruining the books and yet people still go see the movies!!! Are you kidding me!?!?!?! These movies make me want to gauge my eyes out they are so bad. How can they even think about ranking it up there with dark night and other box office explosions?? GAH!!! My hope for humanity and sanity has evaporated!
I wonder how this film will do in week 2. Will all the people who were running over themselves to see it on opening day came back for repeat viewings?
Girl power rules the box office! Oh Happy Day!
