TV ratings: 'Stars' shine for ABC Monday

mya2_dwts_290.jpgFast National ratings for Monday, Nov. 9, 2009

"Dancing with the Stars" and ABC returned to the top of Monday's ratings with the World Series over, and "House" returned to FOX with its usual strong numbers in the 18-49 demographic.

Elsewhere Monday, first leg of a three-part crossover gave "CSI: Miami" a boost, while the much-hyped threesome storyline on "Gossip Girl" didn't move the needle too much, at least in the overall numbers. "The Jay Leno Show," meanwhile, hit one of its lowest totals yet for NBC.

ABC led the night with 15.3 million viewers and a 9.7 rating/15 share in households. CBS (11.9 million, 7.5/12) came in second. FOX finished third with 10.1 million viewers and a 5.9/9, while NBC (4.9 million, 3.2/5) snagged fourth. The CW (2.5 million, 1.6/2) trailed

FOX won the adults 18-49 demo with a 4.0 rating, edging CBS' 3.9. ABC finished third in the demographic with a 3.2. NBC averaged 1.8 and The CW 1.2.

The last plea didn't work too well, and this one will probably fall on deaf ears too. But I'm gonna say it anyway:

The petty personal attacks and fake-name posting are getting really old. Please keep things on topic -- I'm all for debate and argument about what the ratings mean, but that can be done without calling each other idiots.

Thanks.

Hey Rena, don't listen to them. I like what you post and find them useful.

Other than that, not much to report. Castle continues to be a "time slot hit" but fans will still think it's good enough (and given ABC's lack of success with its new shows, it probably is for purposes of getting another season), Gossip Girl still is sinking the CW and continually shows how misplaced Dawn Ostroff's reliance on it as a template for all its shows was, the CBS lineup still needs new blood (but isn't likely to get any until next year), CSI Miami needs desperately to be shot on film again and whomever thought that bringing back Heroes for yet another season should be fired (but the boss can't really fire himself can he? ;)

Looks like the street teamers are out posting false lies today.

Good thing Rick is one of the best ratings reporters out there.

I'll grant you the competition isn't exactly tough, given how the Hollywood trades and L.A. Times have morphed into cheering sections for the industry, but unlike a lot of his competitors (at least the ones I am exposed to) Rick generally doesn't fall for the hype (even if he occasionally still calls an occasional "tie" where none should be).

I agree with Rick. DEbate here is fun and necessary. Name calling is not. I really wish Castle would rise steadily as it is such an awesome show.

OH well. REminds me of Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis.

The CBS comedies are still doing OK, but CBS recently towered over Mondays, with Two and a Half Men getting close to 20 million viewers routinely and CSI Miami occasionally being CBS' #1 show.

They are still doing OK, but that is more a factor of the other networks not taking advantage.

It's pretty clear CBS needs new hits to replace the CSI franchise if it doesn't want to become the next NBC.

It made a positive step with The Mentalist last year and to a degree with NCIS LA this year (although its ratings are still ebbing slowly and it's a mystery how well it'd do without NCIS as its lead-in). It also found an OK performer in The Good Wife (at least to this point) which is doing slightly better than the lamented Without a Trace.

But CBS remains at the tipping point where it needs a true breakout hit (or three!) to lead it into the next decade.

All this doesn't mean it's not doing better than the competition. It is, but the competition isn't doing much right, sadly. :( So CBS is essentially in a race with itself and against the irrelevance in which its sister network CW is wallowing.

Castle writers were in fine form last night! That show just keeps getting better and better! Can't wait until it's numbers eclipse CSI: Miami

I don't quite understand... Zap2it has Trauma beating Heroes in Ratings and total viewers, but tvbythenumbers has Heroes beating Trauma significantly in ratings. Can someone help me break down Zap2it's system and how it differs from tvbythenumbers nielsen ratings????

@DerekH. The ratings on tvbythenumbers are for the 18-49 demo, the ratings on zap2it are for all viewers

Come on January...
