TV ratings report: World Series hits a five-year high
The New York Yankees finished off the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night to win the World Series -- and also finished off most-watched Fall Classic in five years. The combination of two big-market, high-visibility teams -- the Phillies were the defending champs, and the Yankees are the Yankees -- and a competitive series gave FOX its best World Series ratings since 2004, when the Boston Red Sox ended their 86-year championship drought.
The six-game series averaged about 19.4 million viewers and a 6.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. Both figures are huge jumps over last year's Phillies-Tampa Bay Rays series, which drew 13.6 million viewers and a 4.4 demo rating. The series peaked with Game 4 (22.76 million), which had the benefit of a big lead-in from late-afternoon NFL games on Sunday.
Wednesday's clincher drew 22.34 million viewers and took a sizable bite out of most of its competition -- CBS' "Criminal Minds" (12.55 million) and "CSI: NY" (12 million) were both well below their season averages, and "CSI: NY" hit one of its lowest marks ever in adults 18-49 (2.8). NBC's "Mercy" and "Law & Order: SVU" and ABC's "Cougar Town" also took hits.
Exceptions to the rule were ABC's "Modern Family," which was down a little compared to last week (8.8 million vs. 9.3 million) but still led all non-World Series shows in adults 18-49, and "America's Next Top Model," which hit season highs in viewers (3.9 million) and The CW's target audience of young women.

Just because the "Men Who Watch Yankees" did the ratings job is no reason to belittle the Tampa Bay Rays, who are preparing even now to turn the AL East upside down once again.
Baseball reality shows are just plane stupid. Who watches these shows?
The more meow comments on this website, the more ignorant he/she appears to be. The first World Series started in 1903. Major League Baseball is a sport, not a reality show. Throughout your whole life, meow should have known this but either chose to ignore it or doesn't know the difference between a sporting event and a reality show.
Meow knows that baseball is not reality, mis-spells everything and uses improper grammar to get you to respond to his post and get you all riled up. He is one of those people who needs attention, and you people are all dumb enough to give it to him by responding. If you did not respond to him or Rena, they would just go away. Fools.
its an idiot owen, that was written by the fake meow, who does a great job at being me.... love how pople enjoy my posts and try to be me... now i know how britney and madonna feel, with all the copy catters =-))
Owen, your idea of ignoring both Meow and Rena so that they'll go away usually works, but unfortunately, both are rather like herpes...they may go away for a little while, but always, always, they crop back up again, usually at the most inopportune times.
Actually, comparing Meow to herpes is an insult to the virus, but oh well.
I don't think this is the real AaronR.
The real AaronR is a very smart, polite and funny person.
It is galling to see his good name sullied that way.
@Owen if you're not reading, why do you feel compelled to try and bully opinions you do not like?
It's really too bad that all the energy some of you put into faking posts by others and trying to bully and intimidate doesn't go into making actual points.
I see many posts saying I shouldn't be read or shouldn't post, yet I see very few posts actually having anything even resembling an argument as to why I'm in error...
Back to the article, way too much emphasis is being put on 18-49. 18-49 doesn't determinate ad revenue. Overall audience does.
ABC is pushing hard to hype its 18-49 numbers because it is (sadly I might add) failing by the only measure that counts: pairs of eyeballs.
It's too bad ABC is engaging in this empty exercise because otherwise I'd empathize with them: they tried to do the right thing by premiering a bunch of new shows.
Sadly, they went to the same producers that have failed repeatedly in the past to garner wide audiences instead of focusing on bringing shows with wide appeal, no matter from where.
But I hope they do not take away the idea that they have to just keep old failing shows on, as it will surely make them as irrelevant as NBC has become if they do.
Rena, sadly, I think it actually is Aaron R. He's really no friend to you. Not really all that polite either.
To paraphrase an old Japanese proverb: "Even the whitest of snow has dirt at its core." (Snowflakes, like raindrops, form around bits of dirt, dust, etc. Science lesson for the day...)
Or to put it another way, I'm not always polite. People tick me off sometimes, too. And I can be extraordinarily cruel when I'm of a mind. I usually ignore fungus like Meow, but I was in a rather foul mood that day.
No apologies, just explanations. Carrying on...
