'Smallville': Get a look at the Justice Society

A few pictures from "Smallville's" two-hour Justice Society movie have made their way online, revealing the looks of several superhero guest stars.

The two episodes, "Society" and "Legends," will feature, among other characters, DC Comics heroes Hawkman, Doctor Fate and Stargirl. The show, which has so far shied away from putting Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in full Superman regalia, apparently doesn't have such qualms about its guest stars. Take a look at "Stargate's" Michael Shanks as Hawkman:

Brent Stait ("Andromeda") is under the helmet as Doctor Fate, and Britt Irvin ("V") is playing Stargirl.

Hawkman and Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) have a bit of a disagreement -- as they so often do in the comics.

"Society" and "Legends" -- which are being packaged together as a movie titled "Absolute Justice" -- are set to air Feb. 5.

Haha! Stargirl's costume looks like you could buy it at Wal-Mart.

Dr. Fate and Star Girl are two
poor choices to enter the Smallville Universe.
Hawkman, looks ridiculous, but I'll withhold full judgement until the episode.

Bill, I would no sooner tell Geoff Johns who should be in the Justice Society Of America than I would tell Reba McEntire how to interpret a song, or Les Moonves how to run a successful TV network. In all three cases, you're second-guessing someone who has demonstrated that s/he is an expert in that area.

A picture is worth a thousand words only to those who rarely think past how something appears to be.

I think it's fair play to comment on the suitability of characters entering an established continuity. Smallville started out with a very specific mission statement and that seems to have fallen in recent seasons. They used to try to explain odd situations or manifestations of abilities, but now it's just 'yeah she turns into a dog'. They might as well have thrown in the monkey.

And as far as judging something based on a picture, that's why the network releases them. They just hope you judge it to be worth an hour of your time.

And yeah, Hawkman looks dorky; nobody has figured out how to do wings yet. And Stargirl should be shiny, not dull cotton t-shirt fabric.

(And Les Moonves has executives in charge of programming, Reba McEntire has songwriters, and Geoff Johns writes according to editorial mandates. Just in case you were taking things to be as they appeared.)

Dear Alan 59,

Everything you own now belongs to Rob. He owns you.

Sincerely,

They probably would have been better off giving Hawkman CGI wings, but otherwise it's nice to actually see the characters look like the comic book originals. One of the things that turned me off Smallville was their messing about with the comic characters -- and not just costumes; I get that they're not always feasible to put on flesh and blood actors, I mean in terms of basically giving them the names but otherwise ignoring what made the characters interesting in the first place. The treatment of Jon Jonzz was probably the "shark jumping" moment for me, though I was encouraged to see Zatanna last year actually look and act like the original. Now if only they'd get over this phobia about letting Clark - who has to be pushing 30 by now - be Superman.

I've seen lots of cases where costimes seem different on screen where characters are actually moving than they do in still photos, so I'm not too worried. Though I also don't think they look that bad at all, esp Doctor Fate.

More importantly though, I don't care how perfect the still photos because *we're getting the JSA on live action TV!* The first Superman series back in the 1950s didn't even have Luthor and now we're getting the JSA. This is a huge step forward.

Im getting so sick of people complaining and complaining about things. If you don't like the show, or you think the show is past its prime, fine, then quit watching. Otherwise just be quiet and let those of us who enjoy it and who are actually looking forward to it, enjoy ourselves. I'm so sick of the whining I could scream...

Is there anyone else out there who thinks that "Smallville" is having one of its best seasons in the history of the program? Callum Blue has been awesome. Cassidy Freeman continues to make "Tess" a greater character each week. Tom Welling and Erica Durance have chemistry that is undeniable as Clark and Lois.

People should try to just enjoy this good show while they still can. This show still makes "Heroes" look like the little leagues.

I am loving Smallville this season, and I think it's great when they pull characters from the DCU and put them on the show. I really like Michael Shanks from Stargate, also, but I'm not sure that he is big enough to fit the costume. Something doesn't look quite right about Dr. Fate's costume, and it seems Stargirl's top shouldn't be so loose. Can't wait for the episodes, though!
