Oprah, HBO get hot and heavy
Oprah Winfrey's cable network won't launch for another 14 months, but before that she's producing a pilot for another cable outlet, HBO.The project from Winfrey's production company, Harpo Films, is a little more adult than your typical Oprah fare: It's about a woman who leaves an outwardly happy marriage to explore some of her darker urges on the wild side of Los Angeles.
"It is unsentimental and pretty shocking, and there is something complicated and destructive driving her," Harpo president Kate Forte tells Variety. "It is literally a day at the pool, where she gets up, in sarong and flip-flops, and walks out of her life, leaving everyone behind so abruptly that her husband and kids initially think she's been kidnapped or murdered."
Erin Cressida Wilson ("Secretary," "Fur") is writing the script and will executive produce the pilot with Forte and Winfrey. Variety says the project is a "high priority" at HBO, which has a development agreement with Harpo.

I think this is a good step for Harpo. Erin Cressida Wilson has impressed me with her two other projects, Secretary and Fur. They are dark pieces. I do not have time to watch Oprah but I do think she is one of the smartest business women (she is hailed as iconic) and surrounds herself with smart, confident and capable folks. She has a good team and innate sense (most of the time) of what will work and their appeal.
I look forward to this work.
Frankly, I look forward to a dark(er) piece.
Exactly hot and heavy, even if she feeds 100 children.
