Obama address causes fewer headaches for networks
UPDATED: ABC changed its West Coast programming plans. New info below, as well as link to separate post on NBC's plans.President Obama will take to the airwaves Tuesday night to discuss his plan for Afghanistan, and per usual the big four broadcast networks will carry the speech.
Unlike a couple of past prime-time addresses, though, there hasn't been any grumbling about the scheduling of the speech. CBS and FOX are only planning a half-hour of live coverage at 8 p.m. ET/5 PT. ABC will go for a full hour, but it's bumping a pair of Christmas specials that will move back a week to Dec. 8.
The cable news channels will also air the address live and do their usual spin and analysis afterward.
Here's how the address is affecting network TV on Tuesday. Check back for updates on NBC's plans and West Coast programming.
ABC: Coverage from 8-9 p.m. ET. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "Disney Prep & Landing" move to Tuesday, Dec. 8. Mountain and Pacific time zone viewers will see reruns of "The Middle" and "Modern Family" at 7 MT/8 PT. All time zones will see "Scrubs" and "The Forgotten" as scheduled.
CBS: Coverage from 8-8:30 ET, followed by reruns of "NCIS" at 8:30 and "Two and a Half Men" at 9:30. "The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show" airs as scheduled at 10.
FOX: Coverage from 8-8:30 ET, followed by a 90-minute "So You Think You Can Dance." Viewers in the Mountain and Pacific time zones will see the full two hours of "SYTYCD."

Ugh!! another speech.
re: Al
Yeah, but this one is kinda important, like whether or not 40,000 more Americans will be sent to war or not. I think that's a bit more important that So You Think You Can Dance.
Yes Alex, but that's why god invented CNN. Escapism is OK, too.....
With the speech rumored to be AT LEAST 30 minutes long (maybe longer) CBS is foolish.
I've longed believe the "big 4" should do what ABC did with its leftover specials -- move them to weeks where reruns were scheduled. Or do what SMART basic cable (e.g., FX, USA, etc.) does -- schedule programs for several showings during the week. THAT would help ratings all around!
Now this is CNN not Fox reporter said that he needs to stop being a celeb. and start being a president. He needs to grow a pair.
winki,
several showings of one show = less original content = suck. content should be repeated; that's why God created cable and your freakin' TIVOs.
that being said, broadcasters need to be like SMART cable channels by having QUALITY programs all week long. no repeats though please.
Yawn! The election is over. Stop campaigning. You don't need a network primetime speech to announce military policy!
Yea, if I wanted to see the speech, I'd turn on CNN, but since I don't care about the dam thing, I'd rather see Charlie Brown Christmas :)
As long as HOUSE airs on Monday night from 8 p.m. until 9, I will be HAPPY.
That being said, I do hope that 40,000 more troops will be sent to Afgan. AND WITH proper and functional equipment!!!
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
Lord knows we could use Him about now.
Thats odd that NBC hasn't announced what its doing yet seeing has they are the mouth piece for the Obama administration I would think they would be front and center. I guess they don't want to look too obsessed with the man!!!
