'New Moon' sets a midnight box-office record

"Twilight: New Moon" smashed a box-office record Thursday night, hauling in more than $26 million from midnight showings of the movie. Summit Entertainment says the second film in the "Twilight" series earned an estimated $26.27 million in 3,514 theaters.

The previous record for a midnight opening came just four months ago, when "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" took in $22.2 million on July 15. The movie, which opened on a Wednesday, has taken in better than $300 million at the domestic box office and another $600 million-plus worldwide.

"New Moon's" huge midnight numbers sets up a massive opening weekend for the film. "Twilight" made $69.6 million on its first weekend in theaters last year; the midnight screenings alone have already put "New Moon" more than a third of the way toward surpassing that total.

I'm afraid....this makes me sad for humanity!

Just saw the movie and I loved it. It was very entertaining, no rocket science of course, but a great time. Wolves were great, some scenes that weren't in the book but I loved them!! Bring on Eclipse!

Eh, I'm not surprised. HOWEVER... just like Twilight, I highly doubt this movie will have the legs to become a Harry Potter-sized success. UNLIKE Harry Potter, Twilight appeals to one, maybe two audiences: teenage girls and their mothers. Nothing more.

I'm glad they're rushing these out so I never have to hear about this franchise again!!!

Modern Warfare 2 Breaks Sales Record - $500 Million Worth
by Eric Bush

Santa Monica, CA – November 18, 2009 – Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to shatter theatrical box office and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell through in dollars. The biggest entertainment launch in history set a new worldwide estimated five-day sell-through record of approximately $550 million, according to internal Activision estimates.

Modern Warfare 2’s launch beat all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records*:

* The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394 million)
* The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)
* The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, $500 million)
* The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($66.4 million)
* The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows ($220 million)
* The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, $310 million)

Modern Warfare 2’s blast radius also extends to Xbox LIVE, in which the blockbuster title’s epic release established the following new standards, according to Microsoft:

* More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
* More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.
* More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc. “The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather engage in other forms of media.”

cant beat codMW!

Actually Michael, Twilight appeals to all ages and both genders. My co-workers range in age between 18 and 27. Literally all of us read the saga and are seeing New Moon this weekend. I'm a guy and I know 4 others who have also read the books. As for "Moms," that's not a demographic. Moms are all ages and races. Twilight appeals to far more than two groups.

OMG OMG OMG I could not staring at those brown boys chesteses! I nearly fainted and spilt my "butter" when Jacob rescued Bella! Lucky tramp! Whatever does she see in that pale thing Edward? Bring on the Mexican Studs!

What's the harm? So it gets a lot of publicity. Parents don't have to worry because there is no sex, no huge bouts of violence...it's tame. And if it isn't everyone's cup of tea, that's fine. I can't stand all the teen angst. But if I were a teenage girl again, I think I could possibly swoon. Well maybe not swoon, but I'd probably be into the whole thing. After all, my generation was the Dawson's Creek generation! lol

Saw the movie and loved it. The series is entertainment. I myself could not understand why "Dumb and Dumber" was such a hit. I was shocked that it took off. Good thing that there is something for everyone out there. So this appeals to teenage girls and their mothers. So what? How many movies do they have to sit through watching gratuitous girls in bikinis (or nothing at all). Glad there is finally something for us. Bring on the eye candy and teenage angst!
