'New Moon' box office even bigger than estimated

robertpattinson_kristenstewart_twilightnewmoon_290.jpgUPDATE: International figures came in bigger as well. New totals reflected below.

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" had one of the biggest opening weekends in box-office history -- and now that the official figures are in, the movie did even a little better than first estimated.

Final box-office figures for the weekend say "New Moon" took in $142.8 million, up a couple million bucks from the weekend estimates of $140.7 million. That's more than double what "Twilight" made in its first three days a year ago ($69.6 million) and almost three-quarters of its predecessor's total take domestically. It trails only "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million) and "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million) for the best opening weekend ever.

"New Moon" took in another $132.1 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of better than $274 million.

In other words, that's really, really, really good.

The movie also led what will likely be the second-biggest overall weekend at the box office ever. All the movies in release from Friday to Sunday combined for a $258.6 million take, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor relations. That trails only the July weekend last year when "The Dark Knight" opened and the total box-office haul was a little above $260 million.

What a waste of time and money..

LOVE it! Totally not a waste. Just because some people don't like it doesn't mean it's not good. And in this case, AMAZING. :) Can't wait to see it again.

Hmm, let me think. Pretty-boy vampires, high school "sexual tension", angst... yup, all the things that utterly turn me away. Reasons to see it: none.

I spent $82 to bring my family to see it and it was worth every penny, I can't wait until Eclipse is released.

To each their own. I loved it!

LOVED IT LOVED IT LOVED IT!! Stood in line 4 3 hrs.,got rained on, cold front came in while drenched, got the flu the next but it was ALL TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! Would do it all again any day!!

Can't wait to see it this weekend!

To be fair, you all loved it long before it even came out. You'd already decided that you LOVED it, and nothing could change it.

I've read the books. They were decent, but not amazing. The first movie was among the worst I've seen. It was terrible. You cannot have good taste in movies and tell me it was good.

Just because a movie has hot young guys in it doesn't mean it's good. It's okay to dislike a movie even if you loved the books and the guys are hot. It's okay. I promise.

sigh, I agree the first movie was a bit of a disappointment. The second one was a lot better--really liked it alot! :)

I've seen New Moon twice and think it's awesome. The movie was made for teenagers and those with a teenage heart. So much better than "Saw" and "Friday the 13th" movies. Guess I don't know why people who know they won't like the Twilight movies go to see them anyway. Very strange......Oh, and guys, if you were more sensitive like Edward and Jacob, you probably wouldn't be envious of these guys and you probably would have tons of girlfriends. Think about it.
