davidtennant_doctorwho_290.jpgDavid Tennant is going from being a doctor in Britain -- well, the Doctor -- to playing a lawyer on these shores.

Former "Doctor Who" star Tennant has been named as the lead of NBC's comedy-drama "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor would play Rex, no longer a lawyer thanks to debilitating anxiety. Instead, Rex teaches his clients to represent themselves in court.

"Heroes" and "Life" pilot helmer David Semel will direct the pilot and executive produce. No word, though, on when "Rex" will appear in NBC's schedule.

"Doctor Who," meanwhile, is continuing with Matt Smith in the title role.

Boy, I hope he's chosen wisely. Tennant is too fine an actor to be wasted on yet another run-of-the-mill TV lawyer series.

agreed tacitus.

Interesting that he's going back to another series. He's booked several movie roles since announcing he's leaving Doctor Who. I really hope this one makes it. Sounds like it could be the kind of character driven drama that is doing well on television right now.

Amen Tacitus. Tennant has the talent and charisma to elevate even a pile of dog leavings to something watchable- but a lawyer show? I am keeping my fingers crossed that it can be pulled off.

Yeah considering he was trying to get away from "the series thing"

Re: Naughty Seat
He never said anything about getting away from doing a series. He just wanted to leave Doctor Who while it was still fun and before he outstayed his welcome.

Sounds like an interesting story....I love David Tennant as the Doctor. Perhaps some of that eccentricity will appear in this character!! Hopefully it gets picked up and we get the chance to see him again.

As long as the writing is sharp DT will deliver. I just hope his experience in Hollywood will be positive. Good luck!

DT with an American accent? Of course a ton of other folks have done it, with varying degrees of success, but that's gonna weird me out.

So, what do you think the pitch was. Its Perry Mason meets Monk?
