CBS wants more 'Accidentally on Purpose'

jennaelfman_accidentallyonpurpose_290.jpgCBS is bringing its comedy about pregnancy, "Accidentally on Purpose," closer to a full term -- but not quite all the way there.

The network has ordered five additional episodes of the series, which stars Jenna Elfman as a San Francisco movie critic whose one-night stand with a younger guy (Jon Foster) results in her getting pregnant, him moving in and mismatched-couple comedy. That brings the show's total to 18 for the season.

While that's short of the standard 22-episode order for a full season, it does represent some vote of confidence in the show. "Accidentally on Purpose" is the least-watched show in CBS' Monday comedy block, but it has been a fairly steady performer so far this season.

It's averaging a shade over 8 million viewers per week and a 3.1 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. It retains about 90 percent of the total audience of its lead-in, "How I Met Your Mother" (8.9 million), and a little more than 80 percent of "HIMYM's" adults 18-49 rating (3.8).

(It's also improved creatively. I didn't like the pilot much at all, but the couple of recent episodes I've watched show a comedy that's much more sure of itself.)

The not-quite-full season for "Accidentally" could also allow room for "Rules of Engagement," which is once again due to join the CBS schedule at midseason.

CBS has now handed out additional episodes to three of its four new shows -- earlier this fall, "NCIS: Los Angeles" and "The Good Wife" each got full-season pickups. Still hanging is the medical drama "Three Rivers."

YAY! Contrary to popular believe, I happen to think this is a strong comedy. I love it. It's the only one I watch on CBS (and yes I've given all the other ones a try).

oh gag me with a spoon, Jenna Elfman is sooooooooo grody. :(

This has got to be the dumbest, most unfunniest comedy of the season and is only getting good ratings because it's sandwiched between more successful shows.

And Jenna Elfman is irritating.

Bad move. This show does not average 8 million. The REAL number is closer to 2 million (I have access to information the networks don't).

Also, the demo ratings don't matter. People 18-49 actually don't buy products. They save their money.

I love this show. It's so funny, and deserved the extra episodes. Good for them!

I thought "Rules of Engagement" deserved a full 22-ep season this year.

I hate this show. Jenna Elfman is awful. Can't stand to watch or listen to her. Try putting this crap on at 8:00 instead of 8:30 and see if anyone watches it.

I like Jenna Elfman, but I don't think this show is very good. First off, didn't even know she was a film critic as they never focus on her job. Most of the episodes don't have a lot of funny moments and the story-line seems somewhat pointless. Most of the supporting cast does nothing to add to the comedy or the story. And you really don't get much sense of the importance of the pregnancy at all. It's more like just an excuse to throw these two people and their friends together and see what they can make of it.

Ultimately, I think the Rules of Engagement is a much funnier show, with a much more entertaining cast and better situations for the most part, especially when they focus on the couples.

Just my two cents.

I am glad this got picked up. Between the other three shows on CBS, I can use a half hour of unfunny pointless tv. Plus this gives hope to Kelly Ripa or Bonny Hunt to try a new comedy.

Can't stand Elfman any more -- a scientologist, by the way, so she is a "space cadet" -- and the previews of the show made me want to puke.

CBS is rewarding idiocy.
