matthewbomer_whitecollar_290.jpgUSA's new series "White Collar" got off to a solid start on Friday, drawing better than 5 million viewers. Two nights later, Showtime's "Dexter" notched the most-watched episode in its history.

"White Collar" drew 5.4 million viewers for its debut, matching the audience for its lead-in, "Monk." Those numbers are in line with a lot of recent USA series premieres -- better than "Burn Notice's" debut, less than "Royal Pains" earlier this year and "Psych" in 2006 and about the same as "In Plain Sight" last year.

The show, which stars Matthew Bomer as a con artist who works with an FBI agent (Tim DeKay) in exchange for staying out of jail, earned mostly positive reviews. And while it didn't beat any of the broadcast networks in its 10 p.m. time period, it did draw more viewers than a few other Friday-night shows, including "Ugly Betty," "Supernanny" and "Dollhouse."

Sunday's episode of "Dexter," meanwhile, drew 1.68 million viewers, passing the Sept. 27 season premiere to become the most-watched episode ever of the series. Combined with an encore later in the night, the episode reached 2.05 million people.

Showtime says "Dexter" is averaging better than 4 million viewers per episode when multiple replays, DVR use and on-demand plays are taken into account.

really enjoyed the pilot. will def be watching again next neek.

Well, DEXTER is just about the best thing on television right now, so no surprise there. Michael C. Hall is just so captivating, and the storylines are brilliant.

WHITE COLLAR, on the other hand, has some potential, but the pilot felt a little rehash-y. A lot of CASTLE, some LIFE and a touch of PSYCH. All those are/were very entertaining, so it might work. WHITE COLLAR is, of course, missing the sexual tension element (unless Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay start to get into each other, which would be HOT). We'll have to see where this show takes us; hopefully it'll go in an original direction and do something new.

Uh, two questions, Rick.

1. Why is this story occupying the slot on the Zap2it TV page normally occupied by the previous night's ratings?

2. Where are the previous night's (Monday) ratings?

David you just mentioned my three favorite tv shows as of late. I miss Life - I hope this IS a suitable replacement to that!

And USA hasn't failed me yet in terms of original shows. Can't wait to see how this one takes off.

Yes, agreed, Dexter is the best show on TV right now. Glad to hear that it is doing so well with the audience, because it is justly deserved. I just can't get enough of dexter and Michael C. Hall is positively brilliant!

Where's the Monday ratings? Anyone, anyone? Hello, Zap?

I enjoyed "White Collar" very much and will record it every Friday and probably (as I did this weekend) watch it on Sunday evening. It sorta reminds of "Leverage," which I also like.

Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay are perfect choices for the leads. I've read that Natalie Morales ("The Middleman") joins the cast this week. If they can keep the MOTW interesting, it ought to run for quite a while.

Monday ratings are here: http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2009/10/tv-ratings-dancing-runs-over-cbs-reruns-monday.html

I failed to tag the overnight ratings post properly, which is why it's not appearing on the ratings page. That should correct itself shortly. Sorry 'bout that, folks.

Go to The Live Feed. It's a good alternative for daily ratings when Zap is running late. Here's the link to today:

Dexter is awesome. Best show on TV.

White Collar was pretty good. I'll definitely check it out some more.
