TV ratings: 'CSI' and 'Grey's Anatomy' lead Thursday

laurencefishburne_csi_290.jpgFast National ratings for Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009

With the premiere-week hullaballoo now over, Thursday's ratings settled into a familiar pattern: CBS and "CSI" led the total-viewer count, and ABC and "Grey's Anatomy" took the demographic title.

"Private Practice" had a pretty solid premiere to wrap up last season's cliffhanger, and both "The Mentalist" and "Fringe" built some on their numbers from last week.

CBS averaged 14.2 million viewers and an 8.9 rating/15 share in households for the night. ABC finished a strong second with 12.5 million viewers and an 8.0/13. FOX (7.6 million, 4.7/7) was a distant third. NBC (5.5 million, 3.4/6) came in fourth, ahead of The CW (3 million, 1.9/3).

In the adults 18-49 demo, ABC's 4.7 rating led the way, beating out CBS' 3.8. FOX took third with a 2.5, followed by NBC, 2.2, and The CW, 1.4.

Thursday night hour by hour:

"Survivor: Samoa" (11.7 million viewers, 7.1/12 households)
ABC: "FlashForward" (10.8 million, 6.7/11)

NBC: "SNL Weekend Update Thursday" (5.1 million, 3.3/6)/"Parks and Recreation" (4.6 million, 3.0/5)
The CW: "The Vampire Diaries" (3.5 million, 2.2/4)

18-49 leader: "FlashForward" and "Survivor" tied at 3.7

9 p.m.

CBS:
"CSI" (15.6 million, 9.7/15)
ABC: "Grey's Anatomy" (15.4 million, 9.8/15)
NBC: "The Office" (7.3 million, 4.3/7)/"Community" (5.8 million, 3.4/5)
FOX: "Fringe" (6.2 million, 3.7/6)
The CW: "Supernatural" (2.6 million, 1.6/3)

18-49 leader: "Grey's Anatomy" (6.0)

10 p.m.

CBS:
"The Mentalist" (15.2 million, 9.8/17)
ABC: "Private Practice" season premiere (11.5 million, 7.6/13)

Blub Blub Blub love hearing the sound of Leno's show continuing its descent in the ratings to bottom feeder.

Always interesting to see the ratings shift during week 2 & 3 of the season as people start to lose interest in the new shows. NBC has some worries (still) with Parks and the new Community show.

It doesn't look like The Mentalist is breaking out on Thursday night like it did at an earlier hour on Tuesday. Still wish they'd swap that show and CSI around. Let CSI die off at the later hour and the Mentalist grow at the earlier hour.

Private Practice is still one of the worst shows on TV

It's official...TV doesn't get truly interesting until January. I wonder if Flashforward will see a Season 2...a very scaled back Season 2.

Nice numbers by Private Practice, but let's remember that season premieres on shows like this usually have higher-than-usual ratings, especially if it's the second half of a cliffhanger two-parter. Private Practice will likely fall off as it did last season, now that the big show is over.

I agree with the people who have said in the past that it would be better to switch CSI and The Mentalist, but I think Grey's Anatomy would kill it, so CBS is smart keeping it where it is. I don't think Eleventh Hour was allowed to succeed last season, since its ratings were decent against the other networks, which is why it's gone. The Mentalist will probably be around, unless Private Practice suddenly starts having better scripts during the upcoming season.

As for FlashForward, I find it intriguing, but I'm still not totally in love with it yet. And no offense against the little girl who plays Charlie, since she's adorable as can be, but there have to have been better actresses to play what is looking like to be an important part. She reminds me of the twins who played Carrie on Little House On the Prairie (whose names I don't remember).

Too bad about Community, but NBC needs to realize that most people don't like their shows, which is why the overall ratings are so horrible. I know they don't care about anybody over the age of 30, but they should.

While NBC overall is not a good state keep in mind that The Office is stilling doing great with the young demos Anti-Doting. Nice to Fringe on FOX tick up. Its hard to stear away from the old dog procederal or young doctors looking for the next "screw."

I am not a prude so that you know. Just don't care for GA

The Vampire Diaries is almost getting the same amount of viewers as Parks & Recreation. Coincidence? I think not.

You know Leno is tanking when even Community is getting better ratings. Pull the plug, stick in the fork, Leno's done.

Why doesn't NBC swap it's 8 and 9PM hours on Thursday? It makes no sense if they swaped the hours and had the office at 8PM, followed by 30 Rock, NBC would've been in first by 1.5. At least giving them a one hour win.

FlashForward is slipping towards what I predicted last week would eventually be a settling down within the 6.0-6.5 range, and it’s only .2 from that already. Private Practice came on strong, but if past performance is any indicator, expect its post-season premiere score to drop also, into the 6.0-6.5 range as well. Survivor is beginning to perk up a bit and should be back on normal track in the coming weeks. CSI and Mentalist continue to hold the 9-11 pm fort for CBS, the latter still below par from last season, but next week will be the real tell-tale sign as to whether it’ll recoup what it lost once viewers get the Private Practice season opener out of their system. NBC is just an all-around lost cause, with Leno posting his lowest rating yet, 3.2. This past week his numbers have slipped each night, either by .1 or .2, but mostly .2, from what he got last week on successive nights, so if he keeps slipping at .1 or .2 every week, at this rate he’ll be down to a 2.0 or so range by January. On FOX, both Bones and Fringe are at about the same level as last week, which in Fringe’s case is still not good. CW’s Vampire Diaries is still doing better than any other scripted series on the network, but it did slip a bit, while Supernatural slipped even more. What’s to note here is how it looks like ABC is already showing signs of this season being a washout for them in terms of their new shows. The Forgotten and Eastwick face short lifespans, while FlashForward will perform as a sluggish “hit” that might just expire at the end of this season because it will be apparent by then how the story just drags on, as it’s showing to be the case now. And of its 4 sitcoms, it’s too early to tell which will last beyond this season, but the one with the best comedic execution is The Middle. Hank will increasingly disappoint along the way, while the survival chances of both Modern Family and Cougar Town will depend on how well they will stand up to American Idol at mid-season, unless they get moved to another night away from the Idol slaughter, but I don’t see viewers being so enamored with Modern or Cougar as to want to follow them to another night in the same numbers, so either way, it doesn’t look good for them.

I think what is happening to The mentalist, Fringe is a example of how packed Thursday is. I for one watched The Mentalist last year and liked it but when it is up against some of the others it goes.

So it's back to splitting honors and trying to find winners everywhere... How disappointing.

The bottom line is CSI won the hour (though statistically, it's really a tie).

The idea that 18-49 is important has been discredited, but Network PR still spins its tale. It's too bad to see zap2it's coverage, which was so great in premiere week, revert to norm.

What happened?

Sorry to be so negative, but zap2it's coverage of the first week of ratings was so refreshing (and practically groundbreaking) in its avoidance of PR cliches and network hype that it's really disappointing to see it collapse to the usual "let's call everyone a winner" nonsense.

It's also annoying to see zap2it's post limiter go haywire again... :( Please fix it once and for all or bring us back to Topix where those problems never occurred.
