The CW orders full season of 'Vampire Diaries' & more 'Melrose Place'
The bloodsucking and the bitchy are staying put on The CW.The network confirms that a full season of their breakout hit, "The Vampire Diaries," has been ordered, while five additional episodes of the struggling "Melrose Place" have been picked up as well.
The good news for "VD" is no shock since the series' numbers have been strong since its debut. Last week's hour attracted 3.8 million.
But "Melrose Place" -- which pulled just 1.5 million viewers last night -- may already be reaping the benefits of having Heather Locklear on board. The actress, who agreed to reprise her original "Melrose" role as Amanda Woodward last month, is set to begin appearing in episodes come November and the network has high expectations for her.
The ratings of the first "Melrose Place" series rose shortly after Locklear joined the show in the early 90s and there's no doubt that The CW is hoping to repeat a little history with her.

For Real? Are we being Punked?
HALLELUJAH!!!!! Best news all day on both shows!!!!!!
why is melrose place struggling? The show is amazing and way better than the twilight spin of!! Everybody watch melrose place!
@Korbi: Vampire Diaries is not a "breakout hit" in any way, shape or form.
It's not a even a "hit" by any rational definition of the term.
The fact that Vampire Diaries is doing slightly less poorly than the other bombs on CW doesn't magically make it a hit.
This brain-dead decision (especially concerning the DOA Melrose Place (aka Gossip Girl: L.A.)) is just one more horrible decision by CW to pretend everything is A-OK even as it's lost 50% of its audience over the past three years.
I can gaurantee that Melrose Place will not see a second season.
Oh Rena... Why are you so angry? It is stupid television. Who really cares wheather some thing is a bomb or a clone of something. Really, It is nothing to get all bent out of shape about. You have issues. You should seek proffesional help.
The fact is Rena has no life. She hates the CW and it's shows, but she feels the need to come on here and let everyone know she hates it. Rena get a life and if you hate the CW so much quit reading about the network. Like the above person said..... it's TV. If you don't like it don't watch it.
Isn't it amazing (and sad) that as soon as a differing opinion about the CW is expressed, the street teamers and trufans emerge and try to smother it..? :(
Why is it that it is so painful to you to read the not-too-stunning fact that Vampire Diaries is not a hit at all?
Sadly for you, this approach does not work with me, so here to you CW street teamers and other trufans:
Vampire Diaries is a bomb.
The reason it should be called a bomb is because it is reality. Calling it a hit like Korbi did is just giving an echo chamber to PR hype (which I realize is what Korbi does).
That said, it doesn't change the fact that in the real world, Vampire Diaries is a failure. It's just a smaller failure than Melrose Place.
And no amount of attempted bullying can change that.
I have to agree, Melrose Place is definitely a good show. The episodes are getting better, yet ratings are down.
Why? It's the CW, no one is watching any of their shows, even though they have some great ones.
Vampire Diaries is not one of them. I think it is a total Twilight ripoff (with just as worse acting).
The reason ratings are down for Melrose Place is because it is not a good fit with 90210 anymore because they have different demographics.
Back on FOX, they were marketed the same and that whats made them both a success.
CW can't come close to the ratings on any of the big 4 networks, so unless someone else picks it up, I agree Melrose will not see even close to as many seasons as the original did, with or without Heather Locklear.
There's a middle ground here. What is being defined as a hit or a bomb has to take into account context. To think the CW's numbers would be as high as those of a hit on CBS strikes me as unreasonable, given that no CW program that I'm aware of has ever had those kinds of numbers.
Only one program migrated back and forth, and that was Veronica Mars, though I suppose Buffy the Vampire Slayer might count if we extend the discussion back to the WB.
To use a slightly different example, Monk reruns didn't set the world on fire on NBC a few years back. But to think that Monk was not a hit for the USA Network is simply wrong.
