'Spider-Man 4' writer Gary Ross will spit 'Venom'

"Zombieland" is at the top of the box-office charts, not to mention a critical and audience darling. Marvel Entertainment wants better.

"Zombieland" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been replaced on Marvel's "Venom" project by "Spider-Man 4" writer Gary Ross, according to Variety.

Venom, a Marvel Comics antihero, was introduced as played by Topher Grace in "Spider-Man 3." The character is an alien symbiote who offers great power (but a really nasty streak) to its hosts, so it's possible the "Venom" movie will not feature Grace in the lead role.

Ross, who's written films from "Seabiscuit" to "The Tale of Despereaux," has been working on rewriting "Spider-Man 4" since July. A different writer, James Vanderbilt, is currently working on the fifth and sixth Spider-Man movies.
