NBC cancels Ben McKenzie drama 'Southland' before its season premiere
Poor Ryan Atwood.NBC's "Southland," which premiered to solid numbers after "ER" went off the air last spring, has just been axed even before its fall debut.
Originally set to start on Fridays this September, NBC pushed its season opener to October 23rd, and though six new episodes of the series have been produced, it doesn't look like audiences will be seeing them anytime soon.
No official word as to why "Southland" has been canceled so prematurely, but rumor has it, the network feels "Dateline" -- which is now airing in what would have been the drama's time slot -- is more reliable and will deliver more consistent ratings.
The show, produced by John Wells and starring Ben McKenzie -- best known for his days in "The O.C." -- could still be picked up by a cable network though.
Any thoughts?
Sorry to see "Southland" go so quickly?
Upset that NBC didn't even give audiences a shot to find it this season?

This is getting worse and worse! The networks aren't even giving the decent shows a shot at all!
The liked Southland the first time I saw it and now, I'll never see it unless another network decides it wants it like Scrubs or Medium.
DAYUM! I'm beginning to hate TV execs more and more for their crappy decisions and their crappy choices of what to air. Another disappointment from Management. TV execs & politicians are getting on my nerves . . .
NBC is the most pathetic network on television! Cancelling a show before it even airs is a slap in the face to the millions of people who watched the show, couldn't wait for it to come back on the air, and now have to accept the fact that it is not returning! Networks who have no faith in their series should be blacked out forever!
Another excellent show gone---great characters , great acting & great plots.
I guess being good means very little anymore as dollars & cents rule.
The worst thing is that we will be stuck with more so-called "reality" shows---mind numbing entertainment at best.

I watched and enjoyed it. I felt it was going to get even better and am sorry now the network never gave it a chance. I hope another network picks it up as I will follow it.
NBC is in a free fall... Why not show it and see how it does before axing? But these are the same idiots that gave Jay Leno 5 hours a week.
AZs usual this season, NBC is nuts! They are almost out of business because of very bad decisions. Cancelling Southland is one of them!
Don't worry, television viewers. We heard your complaints about our canceling "Southland", and so, on Fridays, we'll be bringing you "JAY LENO: SPECIAL FRIDAY EXTRA UPDATE EARLIER IN THE NIGHT EDITION". It's also taped in the southland that you viewers like so much!
finally a smart decision by NBC! i'm sorry for all the fans, but this show's ratings just kept dropping and dropping, NBC was smart to cancel this ratings bomb.
How moronic. NBC is out of its collective mind.
Hey... maybe this is the best thing that could happen to the show. Another network will pick it up because it's AWESOME, it'll run for years, earn the awards it deserves, and NBC will file for bankruptcy. What a bunch of tools.
