Matthew Perry wants back on network TV

matthewperry_17againredcarpet_290.jpgMatthew Perry's last couple of TV projects haven't fared too well, but the former "Friends" star is hoping to change that with a project that he's working on both in front of and behind the camera.

Perry is developing a comedy about a guy who's staring down midlife and not liking what he sees. He'll play the lead role in addition to co-writing and executive producing the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Alex Barnow and Mark Firek, who have worked on "Family Guy" and "'Til Death," will write the script with Perry and serve as exec producers. So will director Thomas Schlamme ("Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," "The West Wing") and former network exec Jamie Tarses, who helped bring "Friends" onto the air at NBC.

Perry will play the manager of a sports arena who starts to reconsider his life when he turns 40 (Perry passed that milestone himself earlier this year). The project, which Sony Pictures TV is producing, is making the network rounds this week.

Perry starred in the ill-fated "Studio 60" in 2006-07. He also co-created (with "Rescue Me's" Peter Tolan) and starred in a Showtime pilot, "The End of Steve," that was passed over last year. He also starred in the feature "17 Again" earlier this year.

it doesn't sound too original, but its got matthew perry and thats all it needs

I hope he gets back on TV. He was excellent in Studio 60, while that show didn't work out, he certainly showed there was a lot more to him as an actor than Chandler Bing. Hopefully this or something will turn out a role worthy of that.

The premise "a comedy about a guy who's staring down midlife and not liking what he sees." Well, I think Courtney Cox beat him to the punch with that one: the only difference is he'll be the male lead while Courtney Cox is the female lead in Cougar Town.

Of the three male leads on "Friends," Matthew Perry's "Chandler Bing" was my favorite. Or, as TV Guide's subscription department knew him, "Chanandler Bong." Sorry. I was a fan of "Friends," but I promise I wasn't a 'fan'atic about it. I'm ashamed I knew that bit of trivia. :(

Anyway, I hope Perry's new project is successful and, perhaps just as important, I hope it's good.
