'Lost': 'Light vs. Dark' in Season 2

michaelemerson_lost_290.jpgWe're still a few months away from the final season of "Lost." But we've still got a long way to go in our "Light vs. Dark" series, in which I've tried to identify previously cryptic moments on the show that might in fact be the handiwork of either Jacob or his nemesis, The Man in Black. Having covered all the moments I think were related in Season 1, it's high time to turn our attention to Season 2.

Just as I did when starting this project for Season 1, I'm looking to you to fill in the gaps of my initial, cursory analysis. I'm feeling pretty good about the inclusion of all the following examples, but I must confess I'm not as up on Season 2 as I am the other seasons. The whole thing is hazy, kind of like my junior year of college or the 2009 VMA's after Kayne's bum-rushed the stage. (I'mma let you finish, Season 2, but Season 3 is the best "Lost" season of ALL TIME!) Let's look at the moments I've identified as worthy of inclusion in the series so far:

  • Sarah's "miraculous" recovery from surgery in "Man of Science, Man of Faith"
  • Hurley's cluckety cluck-cluck dream in "Everybody Hates Hugo"
  • Kate's horse in "What Kate Did"
  • Charlie's dream in "Fire+Water"
  • Dave's appearance in "Dave"
  • Yemi's appearance to Charlotte Malkin in "?"
  • Eko's dream in "?"
Note: I left off Walt's appearances to Shannon intentionally. While they are worthy of discussion, especially as we hope and pray Walt's story pays off in Season 6, I'm not sure they should be included in this series. Walt's his own can o' worms when dealing with the spooky and supernatural in "Lost."

I'm also considering Sun's "miracle" pregnancy, although it's obviously up for discussion about whether or not that pregnancy is due to intervention from above or exotic dark matter below. Given that Juliet identified high sperm counts across the board during her medical assessments, it's clear Jin wasn't a special case. But you could also counter that there's no evidence that it was ALWAYS this way. Ethan was born fit as a fiddle on the Island in 1977, pre-Incident but post-Tawaret destruction. Did the unleashing of energy start the infertility problems on the Island, or did a change in psychic energy on the Island cause biological changes for both men and women?

That paragraph only scrapes the surface of the issue, one that will undoubtedly play itself out in Season 6. But in addition to hearing your own suggestions about other instances to be included in "Light vs. Dark," I'm curious if you think Sun's pregnancy should be included or not as a way to work ourselves back towards issues of fertility on the Island as well as in the show. It'll be a nice way to start tomorrow's discussion of this topic more in-depth.

I think Sun's pregnancy is product of the healing powers of the Island. I'm not sure it really had to do with a direct result of Jacob or MIB. As per anything else, I need to rewatch S2 myself.

Agree with Moorhead. I think Sun getting pregnant is similar to Locke walking, Rose being healed, Jack surviving an appendectomy in the jungle, etc.

One point - we still don't really know when the statue was destroyed. We know it was intact as late as Jacob and the MIB's conversation on the beach, which was presumably somewhere in the 1800's (assuming the ship in the water was indeed the Black Rock). But the only other time we've actually seen it in the 20th and 21st century time periods has been destroyed in 2004+. When it came down and whether it was a result of the Incident is still up for debate.

I think that any powers the island may or may not have to heal, allow/disallow pregnancy, etc is still a result of the powers of Jacob and the MIB. I don't feel they exist independently of one another, so anything the island "does" to anyone can still be traced back to one or both of their influence. What that means is that there is no "higher" or more independent power than those of Jacob and the MIB. Everything else stems from them.

@Barry - about the island being an end result of Jacob/MIB or both in it's mystical healing powers - I can see that. Perhaps what Ryan is looking for is more direct contact and/or influence. Dunno....Ryan?

I think what needs to be discussed is not Sun getting pregnant, because there was never anything that would prevent that. what we need to look at is Jin's sudden fertility and the fact that the baby was delivered normally outside the Island

I agree with sin, the revitalization of Jin's little swimmers is more to blame...I cant beleieve that I'm discussing a fictional character's sperm count.

To me, talking about Sun's pregnancy is indeed talking about Jin's sudden fertility. I guess I could have made that clearer in the entry.

Yeah, Sun getting pregnant is the byproduct of Jin's sperm count quintupling - to me that's already established dogma.

As for why men's sperm count increase so rapidly on the island... isn't that obvious? All the hot babes. No need to over-analyze here.

I think we need to examine Eko as a whole in this season. If the Man in Black is somehow connected to the smoke monster, and there's been some hints in Season 5 that he is, then Eko staring down the beast and forcing it to retreat in "The 23rd Psalm" means either his convictions were more powerful than MiB at that time, or he was under Jacob's protection. Also, the fact that he took up the button-pushing charge when Locke chose to resign is more than coincidence, I feel.

I agree with Other Sean, except that I think the actor leaving the show means that we have to pretty much ignore -- or at least take with many, many grains of salt -- everything that happened to Eko in the third season.
