Benjamin Bratt, who played Detective Rey Curtis on the NBC series from 1995-99, will reprise his role in an episode set for later this season, NBC says. The episode will feature him reuniting with his former boss, Lt. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson).

"I am thrilled that Ben is coming back for a return appearance," "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf says. "He joined us for our recent 20th anniversary celebration and it was like he never left."

The "Law & Order" appearance will be the second big guest spot for Bratt this season. He's also set to appear on ABC's "Modern Family" as Gloria's (Sofia Vergara) ex-husband.

Bratt played Curtis for seasons six through nine of "L&O." The character was written out at the end of the 1998-99 season when he took early retirement to care for his wife, who had multiple sclerosis. Bratt earned an Emmy nomination for the role that year.

NBC hasn't set an airdate for the episode yet.

Interesting. I wondered if we were going to see former cast members make appearances this season. Might we see Mr. Moriarity this season? Or how about Steven Hill? While Bratt's character grated on my nerves from time to time (especially his holier-than-thou disposition), he was a good foil for our beloved Orbach's Briscoe. In fact, as a huge fan of L&O, if I had to choose a detective pairing that I enjoyed most it would be the Briscoe-Curtis combo. Those were the halcyon days for this show. Mind you, I've remained a faithful fan from the pilot to today. No other series (save the good old prime-time sudsers of the '80s) has held my attention for its entire run. Long live Law & Order!

I like Bratt and was hoping his show the Cleaner would continue. Good to see him back on Law and Order.

What, is "The Cleaner" not returning? I love that show!
