WTF? Movie Bites: Get ready for new 'Ghost Rider,' 'The Fly'
More signs the economy must be on the mend, at least in Hollywood: We're getting head-scratchers of movies.
Did anyone really, for example, want a sequel to Nicolas Cage's hellaciously bad 2007 comic-book movie "Ghost Rider?" The movie got a dismal 26 percent rating on RottenTomatoes... but it pulled in $228 million worldwide, which must be good enough. On the other side of the spectrum, David Cronenberg's 1986 "The Fly" was enjoyable -- we still quote Brundlefly -- but it still holds up 23 years later.
Columbia Pictures must be hoping a second "Ghost Rider" can further cash in on superhero-movie mania: The studio is in talks with David Goyer, a producer on the first installment, to come up with a story, according to Variety.
The Ghost Rider is Johnny Blaze, a stuntman who returns to life thanks to a deal with the devil. The catch is, he turns into a flaming skull-headed vigilante tasked with hunting down demons who pose a threat to Old Scratch.
As for Cronenberg, The Hollywood Reporter claims he's hard at work at a remake to his earlier effort, itself a remake of the 1958 Vincent Price classic. But why? Special effects have advanced, but the performances by Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis are just as poignant, as is the message about playing God.

Why not re-make the fly? I do not believe the message was merely to "not play god" but more of a play on certain common fears as well as fears of the time. Fear of loss of identity and bodily harm are huge universal fears. Cronenberg also touches on the huge fear of AIDS of the time and the feeling of hleplessness in a world that does not understand. There is so much new fear in the world today, I'd love to see what he has to say about it. Terrorism? The economy? Please... wow us. Cronenberg is an excellent film maker, I think he knows what he is doing... I want to see more good body horror.
Long live the new flesh
Is Hollywood devoid of originality? Why are they making remakes of so many movies? They even made a remake of "The Stepfather".
im just worried making all these remakes of movies poorly the next generation of movie watchers will never enjoy or notice the original classics.... ghost rider would be great if under new direction and acting... I always enjoy actors that have no fan following... more money for the movie... a good story beats effects any day people need to realize a big budget doesnt mean good movie..
Sony needs to make a new Ghost Rider to keep the rights. Simple as that.
