TV ratings: Leno drops but 'Biggest Loser' solid Tuesday
Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009"The Biggest Loser" began its eighth cycle Tuesday with fairly good ratings, but the curiosity factor for "The Jay Leno Show" -- and consequently its audience -- dropped off by quite a bit.

This makes sense, since Leno's show is a *whispers* variety show *stops whispering* and this genre is no longer in vogue. I imagine he'll be pulling in half his current ratings this time a month from now. It all depends on the day, of course, as some of the shows at 10/9 on a couple nights during the week are not that strong. Tuesday nights, for example, could easily go to Leno if the shows ABC and CBS have slated don't do well (The Good Wife is one such show, which may tank quickly if viewers don't fall in love with it right away).
I figure NBC will stick to their guns as long as Leno has at least one decent ratings night per week. Otherwise, they'll do what they've been doing for the past decade and only focus on the 18-35-year-old male, urban, high-middle-to-high income bracket ratings, and to hell with everybody else.
Leno still beat CBS thats all that matters.
Well I wonder how long the CW will keep Melrose Place around?
Nice to see that the Big Brother finale did so well...
I agree with you AaronR. :)
Leno's rating drop (losing 40% day-to-day) would be a sign of extreme weakness if it were a new show. It's likely it will continue dropping.
I still say Leno would have been best used in occasional specials which would garner close to 20 million viewers.
As is, I look for NBC to call it a huge success no matter what as Jeff Zucker has been doing since he took over and sent NBC's ratings steadily down and justifying it with the demo spin dance.
I also agree with your negative outlook on The Good Wife. The previews do not look good (shooting on video didn't help any!)
As for Melrose Place, katie, I think CW should never have made that show in the first place. 90210 was a ratings disaster that should never have been renewed and making one more was clearly a brain-dead idea (or as we call those nowadays a CW idea!)
For some reason, Dawn Ostroff's employers are letting her stay the course on a ride that leads inexorably to bankruptcy.
Also I notice that NCIS was, once again, the night's highest rated show and once again did not appear in the lead on even the article...

I think every one predicted Jay Leno would fall off as the show becomes less of a novelty. I am surprised the network gave up five days of prime time viewing to the show. I used to watch Law and Order during this time slot a couple times a week.
If you notice, NBC won the demo for all three hours. Plus leno still managed to increase from Biggest Loser. That's considered good. I'm glad that NBC kept The Biggest Loser! I remember when it was getting horrible ratings, but every year it goes up higher and higher! =]
Isn't it funny...The CW is the smallest (or newest) network, yet its shows absolutely dominate the critics, bloggers and commenters' posts. Melrose and 90210 may not be a "live viewing" monster, but it's getting viewed...and people are talking about it incessantly.
It's only ostriches like Rena Moretti who believe the shows are disasters. Why not give a watch, Rena, and stop grinding your personal axe with Ms. Ostroff. She obviously fired you at some point, or ran over your dog, or something to make you such a wretched, wicked person.
You're probably a 50-something washed-up bitter woman with 2 dozen cats, so you're not even in the CW demo and we could care less if you watch or not. Just keep clicking until you get to "The Biggest Loser," the story of your pathetic life.
I am liking Jay Leno's new show. I think he's funny, and I'm glad he's back!
I'm happy that Biggest Loser did great in the ratings. Love that show. I hope it continues for a long time.
It's one of the few reality shows that actually changes lives for the better.

As much as I can't stand Rena, she's accurate in claiming that the CW is just an all around disaster. That doesn't mean that all the shows are terrible (Smallville is one of my favorites), but from a business perspective, I have serious doubts that the CW will still be around in a few years.
