TV ratings: 'Big Brother' leads a CBS sweep Thursday

jeff.jpgFast National ratings for Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009

CBS rolled to a ratings win Thursday night, with "Big Brother 11" and its crime dramas all posting solid end-of-summer numbers.

Ratings for the night will likely change some because some local stations aired preseason NFL games in primetime, but as things stand CBS was the clear winner with 9.4 million viewers and a 6.0 rating/10 share in households. FOX (5.3 million, 3.4/6) finished a distant second. NBC (4.9 million, 3.3/6) came in third, a little ahead of ABC (4.4 million, 3.1/5). The CW trailed with 1.6 million viewers and a 1.1/2.

CBS also led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 2.5 rating. FOX came in second with a 1.7, edging NBC's 1.6. ABC scored a 1.3 to finish fourth, while The CW drew a 0.6.

Someone explain to me how The Mentalist is the highest-rated show of the week and Big Brother the lowest-rated CBS show and Big Brother "leads a CBS sweep". ;)

I'm sorry but that headline is just plain misleading.

I will reiterate my prediction that The Mentalist will be Thursday's highest-rated show this season as well as once again request that the TV ratings board be moved back to Topix, which is a superior platform.

Big Brother has the "all important" demos so whereas The Mentalist has more viewers, Big Brother has more viewers the advertisers want. Seems stupid to take your older viewers for granted but that is the way the TV biz is stacked. In other words there could be 20 million viewers but only 1 million are in the "preferred" age range for one show and there could be 6 million viewers and 2 million are in the "preferred" age range for a different show and the 6 million viewers show would win the night.

I believe there was an episode of South Park a few seasons back where it suddenly became trendy to eat and poo in reverse. Only the coolest people could do this, or so it seemed, and therefore most people in South Park were left out, since they are not cool.

Sounds about how the ratings are seen by advertisers and the like these days. I could get grosser with comparisons like this, but I won't.

:P

well now that Jeff is gone, so are we..wife and I..have been watching Big Brother since it started....gone now...oh ny the way..we are 60 and 62 not kids anymore..BUT REALLY ENJOYED THE SHOW'S OVER THE YEARS..BUT NOT ANY LONGER..JORDAN SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT OF THE HOUSE TO SAVE JEFF..OH WELL SEE YA

Rena I dont think it's misleading I am pretty sure they were saying it leads a sweep because it came on at 8pm.

At least thats what I got out of the headline.

I agree. No Jeff,I'm done. No more Big Brother for me.

Ugh, Rena. Big Brother "lead" CBS to a sweet because it WAS the lead. The other shows FOLLOWED the lead. You see how that works? You know you're just angry because the article mentioned the show that did best in the 18-49 demo instead of which show did best overall. Get over it, not every article needs you complaining about it.

I was getting into a 'Fringe' repeat which was new to me and then these inane text messages began to appear taking up a third of the screen and would not stop so over I switched to CSI. The point someone made about advertisers only caring about 18-49 year olds is a problem. Television is supposed to be infused with democratic principles but vested corporations who control the mediums' funding and content have undermined those democratic principles by picking apart the demographics for each program. We should really be alarmed by this corporate intrusion into our privacy. All that should matter and be allowed is to count the total number of households who watch a certain program. That is as far as the demographic inquisition should go.

Im done Jeff should have been able to stay with Jeff finding the key to Pandoras box. I only watched it because of Jeff, cant stand natalie and kevin. Your rating are going to go down now.

I'm starting to come around Rena.
Its nice to see "Bones" is still holding its own in reruns. The "Fringe", "Bones" team up that I was pushing for last year however dosen't seem like a good idea(again the reason I'm not a TV programmer). Maybe they should try "Fringe", "Dollhouse" instead. If they stick to the schedule they have now, "Dollhouse" will get its lowest rating ever & that saying something.
