Tuesday ratings breakdown: 'NCIS' times two
Tuesday night's TV lineup didn't feature as many premieres as Monday's did, but a couple of shows that did make their debut did so in a very big way. A look at the standouts and sore spots from the night in ratings:Winner: "NCIS." It's almost unheard of for a show beginning its seventh season to hit an all-time high, but that's exactly what CBS' veteran crime show did when it drew 20.6 million viewers in the final same-day nationals (up from 20 million in the overnight numbers). It also set a series high in adults 18-49 (4.8 rating), which was a 33 percent improvement over its premiere last year.
"NCIS" has always had a loyal (and pretty good-sized) audience, but it had the reputation of one of those shows that people watched but never talked about. Not anymore.
Loser: The CW. Even by the network's standards, "90210" and "Melrose Place" took a beating against the full plate of competition (for more, see here). "90210" at least held steady in the C-dub's core audience of young women, but "Melrose" is having a seriously rough go.
Winner: "NCIS: Los Angeles." "The Mentalist" was last season's only bona fide first-year hit. "NCIS: LA" (18.73 million viewers), airing in the same timeslot, drew 3 million more viewers than "The Mentalist" did for its premiere. It retained better than 90 percent of its lead-in's audience, which is excellent.
Winner (with a couple of caveats): "The Good Wife." CBS finished its sweep of the night with this well-reviewed drama, which scored 13.71 million viewers and a 3.1 rating in adults 18-49. In terms of viewers, that was CBS' best season premiere in the timeslot since "Judging Amy" in 2002 and was well ahead of "Without a Trace" last year, both overall and in the demo. On the (somewhat) down side, it fell off about 30 percent from "NCIS: LA" and also dropped in its second half-hour.
Somewhere in between winner and loser: "The Forgotten." ABC's crime show snagged 9.54 million viewers and a 2.6 adults 18-49 rating. It hung onto more of its "Dancing with the Stars" lead-in (15.37 million from 8 to 10 p.m.) than did "Castle" on Monday but still lost a sizable chunk of the audience. It's something to keep an eye on when "DWTS" switches to its regular, hour-long results show next week.

So "The Good Wife" was well ahead of "Without a Trace" in the same time slot. Don't suppose that has anything to do with TGW being a brand new show that people want to check out and that it followed both NCIS shows. No, couldn't be that. WAT did very well for CBS last year, but it was in its seventh season and had already established its fan base, which (incidentally) was very loyal after following it to three different days during its seven years. Only time will tell whether TGW will do as well and last as long.
The Good Wife will Fail! It will go as fast as CANE did last yeat - if not faster.
Axe the CW!
NCIS:LA has nothing on the original. The characters are far less engaging and the whole thing left me feeling, meh. I'll pass on this one.
Already have forgotten the...uh, um, you know. Sorry, I prefered My Own Worst Enemy.
The Forgotten actually was good. The main characters focus less on the criminals and more on the victims. They want to identify the victims so that the families can have closure. Seriously, give it a shot.
How did you think NCIS LA could compete with the NCIS team. They are awesome and very entertaining, I have been a fan since beginning. Don't try to replace any of the crew either. Look at CSI Grissom made that show.
The Forgotten was horrible. The entire premise was kindof cool. Acting-wise, story-wise, and everything else-wise it was a letdown. The ending was laughable. Scratch that, I laughed as soon as I saw the ending started and turned it off never to be seen again.
ncis los angeles i'll pass on this one, can't compair to the original...
WOW - Why are they CRAMMING all the shows on THURSDAY..?? My DVR & VCR can't cover THAT many shows at one time - why can't they distribute them more evenly on the other days..?? Like Monday - and Wednesday - those are NOT so filled up... Sheeze...
I never understood why it's supposed to matter that people "talk about" a show...
To me that's just PR spin (as in CW trying to spin Gossip Girl's awful ratings by stating that is was "buzzed about").
If a lot more attention was given to real numbers and a lot less to PR spin, maybe executives would finally focus on viewers instead of focusing on getting good press and ratings would start climbing again.
It will be interesting to see how all those new shows do in the coming weeks. Something tells me - OK, the Crystal Ball tells me ;) - that there won't be any solid hits coming out of this batch except possibly for NCIS LA (the Crystal Ball was fuzzy on that one).
Network TV is having a string of bad development years, which anywhere but in Hollywood would prompt a re-thinking of the whole process. In Hollywood, it brings about wringing of hands about the internet and gaming. :(
NCIS LA seemed to be traditional crime drama more than a relative of the original. I saw the spin-off pilot and the new one Tuesday. The feel just isn't there yet, I can see where it might go, but I'm not sure I have the patience to stick with it very long if we don't see it develop the kind of characters and situations that makes the original work.
I liked The Good Wife as it developed. In the beginning I wasn't sure, but by the end I saw something worth giving it a second viewing.
I never planned to watch The Forgotten. I gave up ABC a long time ago. The CW offers only more of the same junk they always have. There are a lot better options on other networks.
