Simon Cowell's 'American Idol' contract may include 'The X Factor'

simoncowell_americanidol_290.jpgPart of Simon Cowell's deal to keep him on "American Idol" for the next two years may include bringing British show "The X Factor" to the U.S.

FOX and Simon are rumored to be negotiating a deal that would not only lock Cowell in as an "Idol" judge for two more seasons (through 2012) but would launch an American version of "The X Factor."

It is also rumored that Cowell could earn about $50 million a season for "Idol" and that a if "The X Factor" is successful it could earn him an additional $50 million a cycle.

What is still up in the air is if Cowell would judge on "The X Factor." Other candidates tossed around are ex-"American Idol" judge Paula Abdul and the two judges on the British "X Factor,' Cheryl Cole and Louis Walsh.

Here's our question: how is "The X Factor" different from "America's Got Talent" and/or "American Idol?" Don't those two shows about cover it?

Yes - X factor and American Idol are similar. The Got Talent shows are quite different. The X Factor is appealing because it makes the judges also mentors - they decide on the songs and dance numbers - not leave it to the contestants. It is more about the judges than in American Idol. I think you will like it. Whether there is room for both shows - well in your large country with great talent - I would say yes!

Didn't X Factor basically replace Pop Idol in the UK? I don't know why they'd think there was room for both here. There are way too many talent competitions already. ABC tried to launch a singing competition called The One (which even had Kara DioGuardi) a few summers ago and it was one of the lowest rated shows ever and lasted about 1 episode. Enough already!

Simon has FOX wrapped around his finger but there's no other judge that does as good of a job as he does.

ok here's my problems with ai and agt:

ai has the best singers but thats it... the ones who wins are the ones who are performers too and can actually make the song worth watching. to know what i mean look at a vma performance then an ai one. if they want to be on the vmas or something they need some soul.

and agt pisses me off because there's so many singers its like a poor mans ai with acrobats. plus its way too cheesy.

id welcome the x factor if it is all great singers who can perform as well

X Factor is all about the judges and that's the problem with it. It hasn't produced any genuine stars like American Idol - with only Leona Lewis coming through in 5 or 6 series. The only real winners are the judges not the contestants - especially simon cowell in line for another $50 million!!!

X-Factor *allows* the judges to actually help the ones they pick.

Amer. Idol *does not allow* the judges to help out. They get coaching with their music choices but that's it.

America's Got Talent is a show for every amateur around the world to show off . . . if they've got talent.

And yes, X Factor did replace Pop Idol in the UK.

I have been pondering for years why FOX has news on at 10pm instead of shows. FOX could easily have this new X Factor show on at 10pm and broaden their programming schedule. With Leno tanking week after week in the 10pm slot--now is the time for FOX to broaden their programming.

I feel X Factor is different from American Idol, which is becoming a bit tired, but I am sure Ellen DeGeneres will boost ratings for AI.

Hi Simon, with your beautiful name I've always being told that I know how to sing; I use to be an out standing singer in high school, I never take it any way fetter. And I also believe it also had a lot to do with my environment; I heard on the news that your team gonna have a special song for Haiti can I be on it please! or if not can I be in the next American Idol.
