Oprah Winfrey heads to 'Netherland'

oprahwinfrey_mct_290.jpgShe's humbled superstars on television, told millions what to read and taken over a major city. Now Oprah Winfrey is headed back into the movie biz.

Winfrey, who co-starred in "The Color Purple," will produce an adaptation of "Netherland," according to Variety. Focus Features will team Winfrey's Harpo Productions to create a film version of Joseph O'Neill's 2008 novel.

"Netherland" follows Hans van den Broek, whose marriage falls apart after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Hans struggles to reconnect with his wife and child, who have returned home to London, while striking up a friendship with modern-day gangster (and budding cricket entrepreneur) Chuck Ramkissoon.

"Atonement's" Christopher Hampton will write the screenplay. There's no word yet on casting or who will direct.

In early September, Winfrey took over several blocks of downtown Chicago's Michigan Avenue to film her television show's 24th-season premiere.
