'Oprah': Mackenzie Phillips talks John Phillips, Mick Jagger and Valerie Bertinelli
Mackenzie Phillips appeared on "Oprah" Wednesday to discuss the bombshell revealed in her memoir: She carried on a 10-year sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas.Phillips began discussing the family secret by reading page 108 in her memoir "High on Arrival," in which she details how she woke up after blacking out from drugs, only to discover she was having sex with her father.
"Your father is supposed to protect you, not f*** you," she read from the book.
Although she said this first instance constituted rape, their continued sexual relationship became consensual. It's at this point that she takes the blame.
"Over time your perception of things become warped and twisted," she said, "I'm not [talking about this] to make myself look good. There's no way I'm going to look good. I was old enough to know better."
Winfrey, who's also come out as an incest survivor, pointed out that there will be a backlash, that many will say Phillips is lying. Genevieve Waite, who was John Phillips' wife during his affair with Mackenzie, denies the allegations and even sent a statement, which Winfrey read on the air. "I am stunned by Mackenzie's terrible allegations about her father," said the statement. "He was incapable, no matter how drunk or drugged he was, of having a relationship with his own child."
Mackenzie Phillips claimed that the affair finally ended because she fell pregnant and didn't know if the father was her own father or a man who she was having a relationship with.
In the interview, Phillips also claimed that her arrest at Los Angeles International Airport last year while she was on her way to a "One Day at a Time" reunion on "The Rachael Ray Show" was what caused her to get clean from drugs.
Check out video of Phillips' account of the arrest.
Getting arrested and getting clean had another result: the memoir.
Phillips said, "I'm still alive to write this book; I'm still here for a reason. I think the universe shows us some purpose for our lvies when you think there's not hope left. This is the reason to fight for it. Think about this. People who've survived this, they're mothers, they're fathers."
On a lighter note, Phillips also recounted how Mick Jagger, a man she grew up knowing, had seduced her when she was 18, locking her father out of the room. "It's a dubious distinction having had slept with Mick Jagger," she said. "I mean come on."
Nearing the end of the show, Winfrey surprised Phillips when Valerie Bertinelli arrived for a tearful reunion. She was very supportive of her "One Day at a Time" on-screen older sister, with whom she had drug experiences.
"I experimented right along with Mack. I did cocaine. No one knew about me," said Bertinelli, and then addressed Phillips, "I feel regret that I wasn't more there for you. I wasn't paying attention to my sister."
For Bertinelli, Phillips' decision to talk publicly about her controversial relationship with her father was the right one.
"You're only as sick as your secrets," said Bertinelli.

do that many ppl even know who MacKenzie Phillips is??
Yuck
People in my generation (baby boomers) certainly do know who Mackenzie Phillips is. One Day at a Time was a popular show.
This mental case has gotton "clean" from drugs countless times over the course of her life that it's extremely hard to believe a word that comes out of her mouth.
I also think we've reached the point in popular culture where hardly anything a celebrity says and does is deemed shocking anymore that resorting to stories of consensual incestual relationships like this drugged old hag claims is the new way to plea for attention.
Next up will be Gary Coleman claiming he fell in love and married his grandmother..."On the next Oprah Winfrey Show."
Peanuts' post is a perfect example of the type of backlash Oprah Winfrey referred to. For some reason, many people have the knee-jerk reaction of blaming the victim. "That can't possibly of happened." Or, "If it really happened, why would she admit it?" It's obvious that Mackenzie Phillips has demons, and whether or not one believes that she had an incestuous relationship with her father, it still seems obvious that her dad's behavior and addictions are at the root of most of her issues. I wish her well.
Peanuts....you're an asshole. It doesn't cross your tiny mind that maybe she couldn't get off drugs because of all she's had to deal with? Usually there's a reason people escape to drugs and this reason would cause many relapses in most people,
Unbelievable. I certainly believe that facts have to be forthcoming...not just claims.
Unbelievable in every respect. It may or may not be so. But so much desire on the part of popular media to embrace the 'worst' at the expense of the dead and their sane survivors. Unbelievable.
Am I supposed to believe this? Does she want me to feel sorry for her...what is the reason for going public? Will the truth set her free, or just disturb the rest of us? I don't get it.
It's a shame Mick didn't film it! Maybe he was to preoccupied shovin' that shit up his nose! I met Mick twice, the first time when he poured himself into my booth while I was peeing at intermission at the closing night performance of BENT...he was BOMBED...whipped out his meat and potatoes and peed all over the toilet seat...he wasn't even aware that I was still using the facilities. The second time I met Mick was in the balcony at Studio 54...he had a little bottle filled with white powder that he shook onto his hand and tooted up his nose..he offered me some...I declined, but wondered if he'd stop me if I touched his crotch. he didn't, I unzipped him and gave him a blow job. So I don't doubt that the Mick part of the story is true...as for incest with her father...dumb bitch...should've taken pictures to sell along with this story....whores like to make money, don't they?...How much is she being paid to tell us this crap?
As I sat and watched the interview yesterday, A few things Mackenzie said stood out. Her father telling her that being a "Phillips" means you are above the law. I think she still believes this. She's there to sell her book so she can make more money , so she buy even more drugs. Was a fan. After yesterday..not so much.( 10 years bangin her Dad, and she still "loves him" thats fucked up.) Good luck.. you will need it.
