Mackenzie Phillips' incest with the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips
"One Day at a Time" star Mackenzie Phillips had a long-term sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. The actress revealed the incest and her drug abuse, among other details about her life on Wednesday in the autobiography, "High on Arrival."
Phillips, 49, says the relationship started the night before her wedding to Jeff Sessler, son of Rolling Stones entourage member Freddie Sessler, when her dad showed up to stop the wedding.
"I had tons of pills, and Dad had tons of everything too. Eventually I passed out on Dad's bed," Phillips, who was only 19 at the time, writes. "He was full of love, and he was sick with drugs. I woke up that night from a blackout to find myself having sex with my own father.
"Had this happened before? I didn't know," she continues. "All I can say is it was the first time I was aware of it. For a moment I was in my body, in that horrible truth, and then I slid back into a blackout."
The drug use and the incest continued. In 1980, her drug abuse got her fired from "One Day at a Time," and so she entered rehab with her father. At this point, she had become his consensual sexual partner and was part of the New Mamas and the Papas.
The elder Phillips even got to the point where he discussed moving to a country where incest wasn't considered taboo.
"One night Dad said, 'We could just run away to a country where no one would look down on us. There are countries where this is an accepted practice. Maybe Fiji.'
John Phillips died of a heart attack in 2001. The '60 band The Mamas and the Papas had a number of hits, including "California Dreamin'," "This Is Dedicated to the One I Love" and "Monday, Monday."
Mackenzie Phillips rose to fame playing Julie Cooper Horvath on the '70s TV sitcom "One Day at a Time," co-starring Bonnie Franklin, Valerie Bertinelli and Pat Harrington. She began having alcohol and drug abuse problems that interfered with the show into its third season. After being fired and her stint in rehab, she was invited back. She collapsed from using cocaine on the set and was subsequently fired, this time permanently. In October 2008 she pleaded guilty to cocaine possession and was sentenced to more rehab.
"High on Arrival" includes additional details about her relationship with her father, her fling with Mick Jagger and her lifelong struggle with drug addiction.
Phillips appears on Wednesday's "Oprah Winfrey" to discuss her "explosive" family secret.
She's also the half-sister to actress Bijou Phillips ("Almost Famous") and singer Chynna Phillips, formerly of the singing trio Wilson Phillips.

Why is it every 3-4 years when Phillips has a new show or book about to come out, all of a sudden there is some 'revelation' from her past she needs to share to garner ratings/sales? We get it. You were a drunken drugged up skank years ago and did a lot of things under poor judgement. Probably still doing many of them today. Go Away!
It strikes me as rather vile and cowardly to say that someone's very name makes one nauseous while hiding one's own name.
Why are people slamming the author of this article? He is just talking about what is in a new book- he's not making up the story.
Well, he shouldnt be spread lies about celebs, its not like he knows phillips and her dad is dead, so for him to write such a gross story without talking to her father is just wrong.
I agree with Rude Betty's comments about MacKenzie Phillips. I would like to know why in the name of God she felt she had to share this sordid story eight years after her father's death. The man's not here to respond to the allegation. She was an adult on the eve of her wedding when she "consentually" had sex with her father, not a small child who had no say in the matter. I think MacKenzie made a huge mistake to air this laundry in public. If she has regrets, she should keep them between herself and her therapist, not broadcast it on the Oprah Winfrey show. Disgusting! Frankly I don't even believe it.
Odd a person w/the screen name based on a sexual technique would
"gag" on a writer simply reporting? This rumor was around back then & it certainly was a sad one then as now. For any reason.
Does she actually believe a disgusting (and probably made up) story like this is going to sell her books, much less restart her faded career?
I also think this should've been kept between MacKenzie and her therapist. I def was fine not hearing every sordid detail of her life. TMI--yuck!
She should write for Law & Order:SVU. Her bits of fiction would fit right in. And if it was true, keep it to yourself, woman.
