Katherine Heigl & Ellen Pompeo set to leave 'Grey's Anatomy' as several newcomers are cast

ellenpompeo.jpgSeattle Grace is welcoming new blood. And preparing to wave a few very familiar faces goodbye.

Yes, of course, the season will begin with the heartbreaking funeral of the beloved George O'Malley since T.R. Knight has left the show, but it seems we may be losing Izzie Stevens and Meredith Grey as well.

No, Izzie isn't dying of that dumb brain cancer. And Meredith isn't drowning herself in the Pacific.

In fact, as far as we know, they aren't dying at all. They are simply disappearing for a while because the actresses who play them have some other things going on.

With Ellen Pompeo very pregnant and Katherine Heigl set to shoot a new feature film, the "Grey's Anatomy" writers have come up with a storyline to accommodate their characters' temporary absence and, according to E! Online, it will revolve around the merger of Seattle Grace and its crosstown rival hospital Mercy West. Apparently, SGH is about to double in size and with this development comes new doctors of course.

Nora Zehetner ("Heroes," "Everwood") and Robert Baker ("Valentine," "Leatherheads") will play residents, first appearing in the season's fifth episode. Both of their characters -- though one may be, on the surface, much nicer than the other -- are set to make some waves at Seattle Grace.

Zehetner and Baker join Jesse Williams ("Greek," "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2"), who will play another new employee roaming the hospital halls this year.

So, thoughts?

Not a bad way to keep the veteran "Grey's" talent on board, allowing them some room to do other things -- like have a kid -- without having to kill them off, no?

Think you'll like seeing a few fresh faces on the six-year-old show?

If she does..it will be to show some of the less talented actors out there how to do it.

So with Heigl leaving for 5 weeks..Grey's loses its ONLY star. Not a wise move.

Didn't we see a merger in "ER"...the better medical drama?

I love Nora Zehetner. She is lovely. She has the biggest eyes, and skin that looks like it has been washed daily with Neutrogena. Hopefully, her stay on Grey's will be longer than what it was on Heroes and Everwood.

Wow, what a misleading title for this article. "Temporary absence" does not equal "leaving" a show.

As for the absence, maybe without McWhiney and McTumor the show can actually tell some interesting stories.

Congrats to Ellen Pompeo on her burgeoning family, and to Katherine Heigl on her flourishing film career, but no George, no Meredith and no Izzie? No thanks.

Hope Pompeo never returns. She can't act her way out of a paper bag

Hopefully this spells the end of this crappy show. I really gave it a chance, but really, if it weren't for the characters and Katherine Heigl I might have been able to stand it a little better.

love grey's, it sharked when they burned all the actors storylines, but i've been back on board for the last season and a half. even with izzie still in the cast cause i love alex. so bring it on shonda. your ratings show you still have a great fan base.

Grey's should take a page out of ER's book and cast actors that can actually act. Enough of the B-listers that stick around for 2-3 episodes, get good actors with relatable and realistic plot lines. Sandra Oh is the only decent actor on the show, the rest can go with Denny & George. For every 1 great episode grey's has, there are about 5 that are garbage. Cable is the place to be for outstanding serialized dramas - 13 episode seasons, all great episodes, No fillers. I'm done with Grey's.

Shonda and company keep going on about how they want to do something similar to ER and keep the show alive for 15 seasons. Um, seriously? Just because you can do something, doesn't mean that you should do something. ER lost its critical fanfare as well as its audience a good little while before it took its (long overdue) bow.

Grey's lost its luster, got some of it back, and now wants to do a merger? Riiiggghhhhtttt. Because that's what the show needs - MORE cast members! I mean, it's not like George was gone practically all season, with his best friend hallucinating. Oh wait...
